This was a beautifully woven and captivating fairy tale and I am in continued awe of Juliet Marillier. She writes with such innate wisdom of the human experience and with a single sentence can break your heart or fill you with such love that you would weep from the beauty. The characters in this novel are complex, diverse, emotional and REAL. I loved Sorcha's strength in this novel and she just down right owns the title of Heroine. I can also say that I have fallen head over heels in love with Red. He was such an interesting character for me. He conducted himself with integrity, love and goodness and yet was still flawed. He was not perfect as many YA novels portray the love interest to be. He was real and I totally and irrevocably heart him :p. The world building was poetic and I enjoyed the subtle and effective fantasy in this book. The magical and the mundane seem to meld together in Marillier’s novels, until she has you believing they are one in the same. And I believe it!
This book is filled with anguish, pain, heartbreak and the simple truth that nothing ever turns out perfect in real life. This is also true to for The Daughter of the Forest. Not much more to say other than Juliet Marillier rocks my world!

This is the first book I've read from Juliet Marillier and I'm happy to say that I LOVE IT! "Daughter of the Forest" is a fantastic retelling of "The Wild Swans" set in medieval Ireland. Not only could I not stop reading it, "Daughter of the Forest" was able to evoke emotions which I don’t think I'll be able to feel again when reading a book. The subtle way the relationship between Sorcha and Red evolved made their story all the more romantic. It's been a while since a book was able to grip me like did. Also, Marillier makes you care for her characters, that you feel their pain, their sorrow and their happiness. I can't wait to get hold of all her books. Miss Marillier just earned herself another fan.
Love. It. Juliet Marillier is een meestervertelster. Zo zijn er maar heel weinig.
En nu is de vraag: ga ik meteen verder met deel twee in deze trilogie (en reeks) of lees ik eerst nog even iets anders? Hmm...

This was such a beautifully written story of sibling bonds stronger than any magic there could be. Love that transcended deep, learned, prejudice and hate. Sorcha was so unbelievably strong to endure everything she did and to stay true to her promise to save her brothers. The age gap between her and Red was obviously problematic but for the time it happened. Still made me look sideways at the whole aspect of their love story. This was a hard story to get through sometimes not because it was written badly, far from it. It was so emotionally charged with Sorchas grief and loneliness, in her having to handle the absolute worst things that can happen to a girl/woman and remain silent. She is an unbelievably strong character. All the characters were so well written you couldn’t help but love them and hate them. Highly recommend!

Set an a time where Christianity is spreading, true love finds you in the end and God is everything.
This book has haunted me from the second I picked it up. It is absolutely wonderfully written, which happens to be the reason I liked it and the reason I hated it. Miss Mariller captures your heart with her characters and makes you love something about all of them only to put them through the most hellish trials I've ever read in a novel. It was a lengthy book and had a lot of history but I loved every second of it.
My only fault with this book is the rape scene. I've read in other reviews that it was necessary for the plot development. I would politely beg to differ and say that it is never necessary. It was so graphic that I was almost in physical pain from the tension in my body from reading it, not to mention the tears. Sorcha and her brothers went through enough pain, loss, and suffering that I felt the rape pushed this almost to "put the book down and never pick it back up" territory.
Aside from that, I loved the book. The ending was bitter sweet, which I felt only fitting for a family who had withstood so much hurt; some things cannot be forgotten.
