I liked the Mary Shelly style writing.

Immediate observation: this book is really gory and graphic, particularly for a YA novel. If that’s not your thing, stay away.

Anyway, for you strong stomached readers, this book was a pleasant surprise for me. I got it free from a library giveaway, and it sat on my shelf collecting dust for a while- horror isn't usually my thing. But when I did finally pick it up, oh lordy.

It got right into the gore, but surprisingly, I found myself unable to put it down! I found myself completely enthralled by the intriguing characters and plot (and pretty spooked by the monster species so cleverly crafted by the author).

Seriously though. The thought of the monster kept me up at night. I first read this in middle school and was pretty easily scared, but STILL. This is the best book I've read in a looooong time. It's definitely going on my favorites list!

4.5 stars from me, 4 stars from my 14-year old son to whom I read it.

This title boasted more words that I didn't know the definition for than any other book I've read this year. Or maybe even longer. I wish I had the ebook version, so that I could expand my vocabulary a bit (I remedied that with the next in the series). Still, at least one star for writing style that includes a strong vocabulary.

Even better is Yancey's penchant for alliteration. So, so many instances of it abound in The Monstrumologist, and I'll leave most of them for you to discover on your own. Here are a couple of my favorites, however:

(Page 206) "Groggy from the brief slip of sleep's sweet sapor, I slid out of bed with an acquiescent sigh."

(Page 218) "...followed by a lecture on superstition as echo of our primitive past, when premonitions were efficacious responses to an environment populated by predators only too happy to oblige our apprehensions."

Wow, he's just a master.

But what's it about? An orphan boy is taken in by a quirky doctor monstrumologist, a scientist who studies the bizarre, the dead, the monstrous. This title focuses on the Anthropophagus, a species you'll learn much about if you take the time to read this.

It was a joy to read aloud, even if I had to pay special attention to not flub up my words. Recommended!

Ever since I finished The 5th Wave series by Rick Yancey, I've wanted to dive into another one of his series. So of course when I saw The Mostrumologist I didn't even think twice before I added the entire series to my TBR. Years, months, weeks, or days later I finally started to read it (I honestly have no idea when I actually added it to my TBR - sorry?). Either way I loved this book - it was so freaking good!

The Monstrumologies is about monsters and not in the cute monsters way - no, you will cringe. I definitely cringed during some moments throughout this book. I still loved it thought because it was hard to put down and trust me, I had to put it down sometimes because of life.

I don't know what else to say because I don't want to spoil this book at all (which is really hard!!). But it has really good monsters. You'll fall in love with Will Henry and Dr. Pellinore Warthrop ( I mean, I did!). Rick is a phenomenal writer and I wasn't disappointed at all with this book. I can't wait to read the next one!

The writing is really good but I'm putting this book on hold until I have time to read it as home; the horror/gore details are really not working for me on my lunch breaks.

This book is very well written. That being said, it is not recommended that you read this book while eating. It is very specific in its gore and I don't usually read this type of thing, but I really enjoyed it.
