Lovely. I could read a whole book of Aunt Betsey and Mr Dick's adventures.

It was fun to reread this novel after reading Barbara Kingsolver's modern version Demon Copperhead. I had a lot of fun picking out where they were similar and where they diverged.

That said, Dickens remains the master at creating interesting and likable characters. I found myself invested not only in Copperfield but all the characters around him.

The scope of the book, the breadth and variety of the characters, the finely crafted character development of Copperfield himself, and the depth of the insight into his character amply repaid the time spent getting through the nearly 900 pages of this work. The ultimate resolution (and some of the resolutions along the way) had a bit of a fairy tale quality, but what do you expect, it is Dickens after all.

Engaging, but not his best work.
I think this one suffers from being a "per word" book. Lots of repetitions and could use a bit of editing.
Too many characters.
The primary characters are great, but there are waaaaay too many characters to keep track of.

Richard Armitage read the audiobook I listened to, but some of the main characters sounded the same, which was tough. Again, too many characters. He had a lot of good different voices, though.

I read this when I was pretty young, and I remember being so enthralled by the name Ham!

An all time favorite of mine. This is one of Dickens' most biographical books, and the more you know about his life, the more you see the parallels. And it is loaded with completely unforgettable characters, some of the best in Dickens' enormous repertoire of vivid fictional personalities -- the dreadful Murdstones, Peggotty, Mr. Micawber, Aunt Betsey, Mr. Dick, Uriah Heep, Dora -- the list goes on and on. Perhaps most masterful is Steerforth, a very human yet very destructive villain. Yes, I love this book, and I never get tired of it.
