Much more modern and relatable than I expected. I'm now curious to read more commentary on Dickens' approach to masculinity; his male characters are so emotionally available and cry at the slightest provocation, and it's so refreshing to read when more modern male authors are celebrated as the voice of American writing (or whatever) for violent and unavailable male characters. I'd also be interested in reading more about Dickens' depiction of disabled people, both as received by readers in his own time and now. David's misgivings about his first marriage feel very relevant in a dating-app world, too, as well as Dickens' description of toxic workplaces long before that term was en vouge. What I found most relatable was how precarious all the characters' homes and employment were - it didn't take much financial difficulty to upend their lives, something unfortunately that hasn't changed from Dickens' time.

I really enjoyed this Dickens work, but the first 250 pages are very very maudlin.  Even by DIckensian standards of bad things happen to the lead character poor David takes the cake.  This does mean that the good that happens to Copperfield are that much better.  But be warned that first 250 pages is going to be a REAL downer.

i am so glad i was made to read this by a professor. maia, you queen. dickens—my apologies, sir. i was not familiar, it seems, with your game.
this is going to linger upon my soul, i think. what a masterpiece. what a beautiful book.

(this is my previous review from when i dnf’d back in summer of 2023. i have left it as a mark of my foolishness and a reminder that people can change.) i was just so bored for most of it. the few bright spots were overrun by ramblings which i didn’t care about nor was particularly amused by. not even my ego could make me finish this book

It's hard to rate this book. I found it excruciatingly slow and predictable, HOWEVER I actually MISSED the characters when I was done reading it! I wanted to be immersed in their little world again. A lovely book overall.

It was quite an interesting story but it was about 600 pages too long <3
