Positive
Positive
- Character dynamics and dialogue between the main leads.
There was a lot of color to the author's writing that made the characters more vibrant and entertaining to read. I felt like their dynamic and their banter was always fun to read. Seokga, my beloved <3 - Mystery of the plot.
I really like the investigative aspect of the story, and yeah, the plot twist at the end with Eodun really got me, which is what I like to see.
Neutral
- Hani, at times, felt a little careless.
You'd think she'd be more careful with... killing people in the open - but I guess maybe that's how her original reputation was built. It can feel a bit much at times, but I can chalk it up to her character being essentially a "legend" and never having to care about making a mess in the past. - Romantic trope usage.
It's a romance book, I've just accepted their existence. The one-bed trope was a little heavy-handed, but ya know, they needed their cuddles lol.
Negative
- The steamy scenes/romantic build-up.
I get that physical attraction is inevitably going to be part of an enemies-to-lovers book, but sometimes it's written a bit too intensely, which I felt in some parts of the book. I wanted to love their romance wholeheartedly, but wow, it wasn't always necessary.

Cosy and beautifully described. Slow burn closed door, took me a while to get into it but found it very satisfying at the end

Okay, firstly - why didn’t I finish this in March?! Secondly - WOW I very much enjoyed this one and can’t wait to read the sequel!
This was so fun and engaging. I loved how Sophie Kim incorporated Korean mythology and folklore into the story. I loved the banter between Seokga and Hani, Seokga’s obsession with coffee, and Hani’s obsession with human food 🤣
For a story set in 1992, there were several modern references that don’t fit the timeline. Cell phones were not at all portable at that time and while yoga leggings may have been a thing, they definitely weren’t called that. This definitely detracted from the story for me, I couldn’t stop fixating on them! It also felt like Seokga and Hani went from hating each other to loving each other super fast. However, Hani’s redemption and that epilogue really clinched this as a new favorite for me.

5/5 Stars
I loved this book with my whole heart. I felt like I was reading a K-Drama and I. Ate. It. Up. While it was initially a little hard to get into, once the plot started to kick in my attention was devoted fully to Hani and Seokga. A fallen god forced to be a supernatural detective and his brand new assistant who serves to be the bane of his immortal existence? Their banter was funny to read and had me smiling at how ridiculous these two were. I loved it.
One aspect of the novel that I genuinely loved was how balanced these two powerful characters were. Too many times, the love interest is this all-powerful and immortal being and the heroine is like a twenty-year-old human - but we don't see that here. Hani is just as powerful - if not, more - than the fallen god. She's smart but arrogant, and obviously the Scarlet Fox is an extremely flawed character, but the selfishness that we witness in the beginning slowly begins to mellow out until she becomes a heroine who is worthy of respect. She's forced to come to terms with her actions the repercussions that her brashness causes, and how it conflicts with her relationships.
And Seokga...oh Seokga. If Hani fell first, well, Seokga fell hard. There was no coming back from his love for Hani and like I continue to say, I ate that up. Due to his status as a fallen god, he's weak, a shell of who he once was. Despite the centuries that had passed, nothing about him changed. He remains bitter and arrogant, refusing to see those around him as, well, people, refusing to treat others with empathy. We see it in the beginning when he's interrogating suspects and witnesses - he's not nice. He's angry and upset at his brother for casting him out due to his failed coup, hating that he's unable to use his powers fully and doesn't realize that his actions have severe consequences. I loved reading his POV and seeing the shifting of his personality due to Hani, that she gave him what was essentially a reality check on his personality until we see him become a better version of himself.
In a way, they were perfect for each other, their personalities clashing due to how well they mesh. Both of them aren't nice, they aren't nice people (characters) but they're not bad, and being together clearly brought out sides of them that otherwise, we never would have seen.
Overall, I loved them your honor. Spectacular, give me fourteen of them right now. That ending made me want to sob and cry and slam my head into the nearest wall.

Loved the urban fantasy setting and quirky characters.
A little slow paced in the beginning and there were tidbits where the romance could use more depth and development but overall an intriguing story that makes me both anxious and excited for the sequel
