Seokga’s coffee addiction spoke to me on a spiritual plane

This was honestly just good fun - I LOVED the Korean mythology, the detective vibes woven in, the romance at the heart of it. It was sort of witty and whimsical at once and made for a very easy listen on audio!

When they marketed this as "reads like a fantasy kdrama" and delivered so beautifully! I love how vivid the 90s setting of this book was, from the bulky desktop computers, to the very slow internet, to the very specific Nokia 121. If you missed any of that, every description of Hani's hairstyle will set you straight.

I love the slow but inevitable enemies to lovers that developed between Seokga and Hani. And I love they never really lose who they were just because they hated each other a little less.

Loved the very typical kdrama resolution. I live for those. And absolutely love the character developments, all the way to the epilogue.

A K-drama in book form with all of its more exaggerated engagements and situations and subsequent reactions. The first half of the book proved a bit insufferable, with the characters acting more like petulant and petty teenagers rather than 1000+ year old beings with centuries of experience beneath their belts. I felt none of the weight of their years, the intelligence and world experience that should have lent itself to their interactions, sharpening those moments and their tongues.

The plot picks up more in the second half, and that aspect I found more enjoyable which helped salvage some of this for me, but the interactions between our MCs remain juvenile in a lot of respects. Because of that, I found it hard to really like either of them. Perhaps if they had been given more time to develop alongside one another, this might have felt more believable, particularly on the romantic end of things. Instead, their relationship felt rather pushed through, and again, love that was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime sort of feeling felt more like the rush of a teenager's first brush with a relationship. Everything intensely felt, a sudden crashing sensation that overwhelms, which for two creatures as long-lived and in some respects as jaded and closed-up as initially touted, felt really strangely forced for the plot's sake. And the tropes. The first half really falls hard into some of them to the point it was all I could do not to eye roll. Less of a natural execution and more of a "used for convenience" feeling to them.

For all the experience and cunning these two were supposed to have, I found most of their interactions, both with each other and with the plot, explained through a series of perfect coincidences or direct ignorance rather than any sort of thoughtful explanation or plotting on the part of our MCs. I had a hard time believing these two were supposed to be as slick and sly as the narrative kept telling me they were supposed to be. This might have been better set as two younger otherworldly creatures as their reactions and interactions fed more into youth rather than experience. Had they been more naive on the god and supernatural front this would have made far more sense of their interactions.

But, if you want something that you don't need to think too deeply on, can just let it go for the ride that it is, and not take it too seriously (as the narrative certaintly doesn't seem to either) then this can certainly be a palate cleanser of a book, which is what I needed for the moment. Overall, nothing too memorable, but easy to read and can be a stupidly fun escape once you just accept the book for what it is. Nothing great, but certainly not the worst thing out there.
