Not the best Maigret I have read. Simenon tries to pull off an almost Miss Marple type of plot. Maigret's return to his hometown to witness an announced murder is the best part of the plot. Maigret as a secondary character, Marple type of investigator is not a good match. The confrontational meal where the culprit is found out is too long. Still, a subpar Maigret is still a good mystery.

Wanted to love this one. Was super intrigued by the plot (a murder promised right in front of maigret) and the potential for emotional resonance (its all happening at the scene of maigret’s youth) but one thing never quite connected to the other for me here, and I found the accusation roundtable toward the end kinda cloying.

I loved the setting of this, in the first chapter. But that's about the only good thing! Think this Maigret has been lost in time and translstion - characters and religious terminology difficult to follow. Onwards with the series .....
