I was given a copy of this (signed, which was extra-sweet) by a friend for my birthday and, after glancing at the blurb, was immediately intrigued and excited to read it. First contact with aliens, plus commentary on modern fame in a world of social media? Definitely a curious combination.

This is a very fun book. The Carls are an interesting idea, and the mystery of who/what they are and what they want is what initially pulls you into the book, but you quickly see that there is so much more to the book that makes it worthwhile, from a fun, diverse cast to unique social commentary and generally just solid writing. I liked it a great deal and am looking forward to the currently untitled sequel.

I went into this book with absolutely no knowledge about it other than what was on the jacket flap. And also that the author and his brother are popular on YouTube, although the only one of their videos I’ve seen had just his brother in it. I enjoyed the heck out of this book, and I’m not saying any more than that, because after reading a few of the surprisingly vitriolic negative reviews, it seems that part of the problem people have with it is that it didn’t meet their expectations— which wasn’t a problem for me since I didn’t have any. It’s not a perfect book, and the writing style isn’t particularly sophisticated, but it suits the subject. An interesting and thought-provoking book. I couldn’t put it down for the last fifty pages.

This book does things to my brain. Like even though I know what's going to happen... I have such a emotional reaction to it. ... I tweeted the first time I finished it... Saying some thing like "Thank you Hank, for an absolutely remarkable book." I just finished it again and I'm like. Damn. It's not often that I'll think about a book enough times to reread it... But I did and I am probably going to reread it again... More then once.
