This book concludes the world of Red Queen. Every once in awhile there will be a series of books or book that leaves me feeling such yearning and sadness when a story that I’ve immerse myself in comes to an end. This is one of those series. The books have it’s flaws but ultimately the world they build was beautiful and haunting. I finished wishing for more and wishing to be a part of it. Which means the author did her job well. I fell in love with all the characters, especially the darker ones, such as Maven Calore. You can’t help but root for him deep down. I’m reluctant to leave this world behind but I guess there isn’t much choice. Farewell and firelight were my favorite subsections of the book. I only wish there was more!

There were parts of this I loved, but the ending left much to be desired; it would’ve been a 4.5⭐️ rating for me for sure if the end was more final for it being the final book.

I’m rounding up from 3.5 stars. This one was unnecessarily long and I felt like I kept reading the same thing over and over. It took me forever to get through.

A few things didn’t add up and it was frustrating.

I liked reading Maven and Cal’s POV.

To be frank, the ending left me wanting. Don’t make me spend 4 long books and not give me a definitive end. That’s just mean and annoying. If you’re going to give an epilogue, then have it tie things up!

Gosh what do I say at the end of all that. Listened to this as an audiobook and the narration was good. I left a lot of my thoughts as notes as I went so not going to add much here. Just that I was very happy with that ending. Cal and Mare could not have just walked into the sunset together. There was too much there. Mare had to be the one to kill Maven, even if it quite literally almost killed her. And after that they both have to live with it. They need time to grow and see who they will become. Perfect ending.

As the Red Queen series comes to an end, Mare and the rest of the Scarlet Guard plot to take down Maven’s reign. Cal and his splinter factions try to make their argument, by voice and by force, that Maven’s rule is the worst case scenario for allies and enemies alike.

Highlights for me were the downright Shakespearian dialogues between warring factions and the constant re-scheming and betrayals. Definitely made for engaging reading. But overall, this just didn’t do it for me. There were too many battle scenes. The ending came too quickly. I felt like a lot of new concepts were brought into this last book, but were left unresolved.

Maybe it’s intentional, to leave room for more books. If so, I guess I’m okay with it. But just okay.

DNF 6%, 1.5 stars

I couldn't force myself to keep reading this book. The pacing was terrible, the worldbuilding somehow got worse, and Mare and Cal were sullen and boring. Iris's POV in Chapter 4 was excruciating. "I love water, the Lakelanders love water, the poor people in this city have to live away from the water while the rich people get to live by the water get it because we love the water so much, I have a wave tattoo" SHUT UP. Her entire personality is liking water.
After that mess, I peeked at the end to see if Cal and Mare at least get back together, and guess what! After four books of buildup, they don't. You have to read Broken Throne (Red Queen 4.5) to find out what happens to them.
I give up. I'll read the Fandom Wiki summary and be done with this series.
