Sometimes I wonder how much of a work like this is lost in translation. I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it in its original language (though Catalan, as a person educated in the Spanish language, would certainly give me a headache.) I especially wonder if the Catalan would have boosted its rating because the book depends so much on linguistics. It's been translated so much, but Samuel is searching for untranslatable words. Maybe this book, too, is untranslatable.
I'm very willing to admit that I may have completely misunderstood this novel. It's just one of those books that made my eyes glaze over, and even though it was written with bite-sized chapters, I don't think I'd be able to explain it very well. And I'm no good with romance, but essentially I felt that women were not treated very well in this novel, so there was no romance for me. But again, it's possible that I misunderstood it. I'm hoping that I did.

A quiet but pleasant little book about chance , luck, love, fate and cats.
At the beginning this book seemed promising but then it went in a totally different direction and ended up not being what I had expected. I didn't "get" it and I wouldn't recommend it.

A cute story, a translation, from an author from Spain who brought a nerdy teacher guy to life on the pages, a guy named Samuel who is a late 30's bachelor and thinks he's pretty much destined to live the humdrum life he's known so far when one day a cat walks into his apartment and then one thing leading to another- a philosophy he's dubbed, Love in Lowercase, he finds himself in the midst of a life. There's an old guy who is a guide of sorts, a nutty dude who's into space and two love interests. It was a quick and sweet read, perfect for when you're in between longer books.

I thought this was a quirky, sweet read. Starting out with the appearance of a mysterious cat and being driven by whether or not Samuel would meet up again with Gabriela. I quickly realized that while the sweet romance aspect drew me in, it wasn't what kept me. I really liked seeing Samuel go from being this sad, almost depressed, single man living sequestered by himself, into opening up and meeting new people. Consciously changing the humdrum way he's always done things. The ending left off on a feel-good high note.

Reminded me it's fun to push beyond the boundaries of UK/US fiction sometimes. Wish I'd known it was translated from Spanish though (I'd assumed Catalan) -- always looking for exactly this kind of book to read in Spanish -- not too long, not too complicated, with simple-ish language.
