-Can their love survive the greatest test?

-Falling in love was the easy part. What comes next is the test ...

⭐️⭐️⭐️ | 🌶️🌶️

I went into Keeping 13 riding the high of Binding 13 (an easy 5-star read). Unfortunately, this one didn’t live up to the emotional momentum or pacing of the first book, and I’m honestly disappointed to say that.

One thing that worked was the continued contrast between Johnny and Shannon’s home lives. I appreciated how the author leaned into that dynamic. Johnny has a present, overbearing mother whereas Shannon has an absent, weak one, adding both tension and emotional depth.

That said, the first half is bogged down by repetitive, overly drawn-out dialogue. This was something I noticed in Binding 13 too, but it felt much worse here. Conversations drag long past their emotional peak, as if every moment has to be unpacked three or four times before we’re allowed to move on. Someone said it gives “Wattpad” vibes, and I just couldn’t let go of the accuracy of that comparison.

Nearly every trope is stretched well beyond its welcome. The “I told Bella to leave me alone” thread was overdone. The “almost sex but not quite” scene played out at least three or four times, practically word for word: Shannon climbs into Johnny’s lap, Johnny stops things because he “respects her” or gets interrupted. The emotional punch just wasn’t there by the third rerun.

There’s also a noticeable inconsistency in Johnny’s character. His personality seemed to shift depending on what the scene required, rather than evolve naturally. Yes, he’s meant to be 18, and some swings are to be expected, but there were moments where he felt wise and grounded, and others where he acted far younger and immature. It didn’t ruin him as a character, but it made it harder to stay connected to his arc.

I didn’t start actually enjoying this book until somewhere around chapter 50. By then, I was more tired than invested. I wanted to love it, but too much of the first half felt like filler and circles.

I’m giving this 3 stars, and it hurts to say that, because the potential is still there. But I just can’t rate it higher when I spent the majority of the book waiting for it to finally get somewhere
