If you like psychological horror, read this. While the premise is unbelievable, reading through how it plays out was scary and anxiety provoking.

Bird Box was an eerie, suspenseful read that kept me intrigued, but it didn’t completely blow me away. While I loved the chilling atmosphere and the concept was incredibly unique, there were moments where the pacing felt uneven, and I wanted more depth from the characters.

The story follows Malorie, one of the few survivors in a world overrun by mysterious creatures that drive people to insanity and suicide if they so much as catch a glimpse of them. To stay alive, Malorie and her two children must navigate this terrifying world completely blindfolded, relying on sound and instinct to survive. The novel jumps between the present—where Malorie is desperately rowing down a river in search of safety—and the past, slowly unraveling how she ended up in this nightmare.

I have to give Josh Malerman credit—the tension in this book is real. The idea of surviving in total darkness, knowing something horrifying is out there but never actually seeing it, made for some truly unsettling moments. The writing style was simple but effective, really putting me in Malorie’s shoes as she fought to survive.

That said, I had a few issues. While I appreciated the psychological horror aspect, I sometimes felt disconnected from the characters. Malorie was strong and determined, but I wanted more emotional depth from her and the people she interacted with. The ending also left me feeling a little unsatisfied—I was hoping for more answers about the creatures and the world itself.

Overall, Bird Box is a solid thriller with an original concept and some genuinely terrifying scenes. It didn’t completely live up to the hype for me, but if you enjoy psychological horror with an apocalyptic twist, it’s definitely worth a read!
