Did not realize this was a YA novel and I just don't really like YA novels.

a lot of tropes come into play here from haters to lovers, childhood friends, jock/nerd, third act break up, "you didn't win but you did win", etc etc etc.

In a surprise to no one, I loved a book written by Talia Hibbert. It took me 5eva to actually listen to this one because it's YA (and boy was it), but I love her characters per usual, with their wit and heart.

Great fat, OCD, parental abandonment representation too!

Wow, the representation of mental illnesses was incredibly impressive and refreshing. Peering into the world of someone else who has similar tendencies to yours is like finding your forever friend group. That familiarity and all knowing sense of what is being experienced and how effortlessly it’s vocalized is why I like Talia’s writing style.

Now for the plot

This was such a cute YA romcom. The two MCs were so great and I loved their chemistry. Former bffs now enemies Celine and Bradley find themselves back in each others lives while they compete for a scholarship.
I loved the different issues both teens were confronting as they pushed themselves for the challenges. I also loved how even though they were supposed to be enemies they still had a deep respect and connection which ultimately brings them together.
Brad dealing with his OCD while also navigating his future plans was well written and portrayed. I really felt I learned about him and what motivates him.
Celine’s past with her father really shaped her future plans and it was such a great journey for her to analyze how much of those plans were reactions to her situation.
I think the balance between the lightness of their banter and the competition with the weight of their issues and future worries was well done. It never felt too much in either way.

3.5 stars, really cute!
