In this Norse mythology-inspired fantasy, the gods' final battle unknown generations ago ended in their deaths. The descendents of these gods, people with their abilities, are considered second-class citizens. Three disparate people find themselves searching for the battleground of the gods: a huntress trying to protect her family from the raids plaguing her region; a former slave who joins a mercenary guild to avenge his sister; and a lady looking to create her own battle-fame outside of her title.

I don't have a lot of thoughts on this one. Technically, this one was good. The different perspectives were well balanced and we got to learn a good amount about this world. The magic and Norse influences look like they could get interesting as the series develops. I, however, felt like no matter how much I read, I was never making any progress. Even when objectively emotional things happened to the characters, I didn't feel any sort of connections to them. Two of the characters felt like they had pretty similar groups they were with, enough that I couldn't keep them straight. There were twists that I totally saw coming - maybe it was dramatic irony and I was supposed to know that? Objectively, I can see that this was a good fantasy, but I didn't find myself invested or enjoying my time. It's hard for me to pin down why this was, but a friend of mine said they felt the same way so I'm glad it's not just me.

Overall, I don't think this was bad, but I was never invested or engaged.

I initially struggled with the language used and parts of the world building. All 3 perspectives just became more interesting and to see them begin to come together was really satisfying.
The tension built and built, and the end made me want to jump into book 2 ASAP
