Excellent writing. I did not care about any character at all and wasn’t interested until the last like 5 chapters.

I really enjoyed this book once the characters had become established. There are three different characters that are very well written and very well defined from each other. Each one felt like their own unique character rather then having them blend together slightly like other books. However, because there was three different characters, it did take slightly longer to grow attached to each of them.

The action sequences in this book are very well written and gruesome. But not gruesome just to have violence. I very much felt the grit and brutality that someone fighting for their lives would feel like.

One of the downsides for me in this book was the names that were unfamiliar to me being a native english speaker. In addition, the monsters and names for the monsters were also harder to keep track of. (I did listen to the book rather than read it which may have helped in this.) All this being said, similar to the characters, once the story became more established it was easier to follow.

I give this book probably 4.25 and will certainly be reading the next in the series.

I was thinking in my thought cage that this book was really good. The pacing never made me feel like it was moving too slowly. My thought cage was active with excitement during every battle scene. However, I did find myself pondering in my thought cage whether I liked Elvar much as a POV. Her chapters were always the ones I was least interested in, and felt like the characters were the least memorable, besides Uspa. Even when Biorr betrayed the Battle Grim I was left uncaring because the only thing I really knew about him was that he had befriended the Tainted and wanted to sleep with Elvar. His betrayal came out of nowhere to me. Orka and Varg were badass though. They had clear motives and goals, and their supporting characters were far more likable. Thought cage.
