A shame that Miller's fluid and pretty evocative style of prose was used to butcher these characters so pathetically. After reading the original epic, this will feel like an insult.

This was the only English book at a hostel in Montenegro. If I wasn’t so desperate to read I never would have picked it up. But I’m glad I did!

“And perhaps it is the greater grief, after all, to be left on earth when another is gone.”
“Have you no more memories?"
I am made of memories.
"Speak, then.”
OH oh my gosh. Madeline Miller's retelling of the Greek mythology hero Achilles was breathtakingly beautiful and well written. Through her perspective of Homer's Iliad, told from the perspective of Patroclus, we are offered a touching and cherished portrayal of Achilles, one that isn't portrayed often. Instead of the fearsome Greek hero who fought during the Trojan War, known mainly for being a war weapon and an unstoppable force that he is. Patroclus is able to bring out the more human side of Achilles a kinder version of him. We see the unveiled part of Achilles who was a lover, a hero, and a man capable of profound devotion. "He is half of my soul, as the poet says." Patroclus was his other half.
crying, throwing up, sobbing my eyes out WTHHHHHH. i cant, i'm SICK TO MY STOMACH FAM. i'm done and tried of reading sad books i can't handle this anymore. too much heartbreak my heart hurts. but this book has reminded me how much i loved greek mythology and and i'm sosososo happy.

Ok this is the best book I have read by far. I had already read a version of Trojan war in high school, absolutely loved it and like most people who read illiad, Achilles was my favourite character. But the character development of Achilles and Patroclus in this is on another level. I genuinely cannot find flaws in the writing, the story, the character depth, the buildup. To me, this is how perfect a book can get.
Looking forward to reading more from Madeline Miller!
