“And perhaps it is the greater grief, after all, to be left on earth when another is gone.”

“Have you no more memories?"
I am made of memories.
"Speak, then.”

OH oh my gosh. Madeline Miller's retelling of the Greek mythology hero Achilles was breathtakingly beautiful and well written. Through her perspective of Homer's Iliad, told from the perspective of Patroclus, we are offered a touching and cherished portrayal of Achilles, one that isn't portrayed often. Instead of the fearsome Greek hero who fought during the Trojan War, known mainly for being a war weapon and an unstoppable force that he is. Patroclus is able to bring out the more human side of Achilles a kinder version of him. We see the unveiled part of Achilles who was a lover, a hero, and a man capable of profound devotion. "He is half of my soul, as the poet says." Patroclus was his other half.

Ok this is the best book I have read by far. I had already read a version of Trojan war in high school, absolutely loved it and like most people who read illiad, Achilles was my favourite character. But the character development of Achilles and Patroclus in this is on another level. I genuinely cannot find flaws in the writing, the story, the character depth, the buildup. To me, this is how perfect a book can get.
Looking forward to reading more from Madeline Miller!

:((( heart wrenching.

how bittersweet it was going from the beginning and their precious time in the mountain to the end. achilles development was painful but made for a devastating and loving story. ugh. i had a guess as to how things would end based on how people talk about this book and i still cried.

Great read, love the retelling of the Iliad. The key to this book is the multi-dimensional characters with their human emotions.

A great book and a great love story.
