This short story is about a dog who got bewitched (bewizarded?) and went on an adventure to set things right with himself.

I liked this story because it's cute and light. Plus I have a soft spot for dogs. I liked how there were parallelisms to the two places Roverandom visited, but they weren't too repetitive, as children's stories go.

This is the perfect type of story to read aloud to a child and introduce them to Tolkien, too. It's fanciful and I think very appealing to the young.

“Valour needs first strength, then a weapon.”

Inspired by the loss of his own child's favorite toy, a little leaden dog, Roverandom is the tale of a dog, Rover, that is turned into a toy, by an irritable wizard. This is a charming novella, that I recommend for people starting to read Tolkien. It is very easy to follow and very easy understand. The story is well-developed and the characters are charming and interesting.

It's one of the best novellas that I have read. Truly recommend it.

Happy Tolkien Reading Day!

My pick for 2023 was Roverandom, the story of Rover, a puppy who angers a wizard and is turned into a toy. Rover goes on plenty of adventures -- he's sent to the moon, and to the bottom of the sea -- where he meets other Rovers, and takes the name Roverandom to avoid any confusion.

This is a charming story that Tolkien wrote for his second son, who had lost a favourite toy while on vacation.  This story, along with most of the stories Tolkien told for his children, make me wish that he'd been my father growing up. The story is rich and exciting, and while it's clearly meant for children, it doesn't really talk down to children, as so many children's stories tend to be.

This is yet another children's story that makes me wish I had children (not my own children. Someone else's kids) that I could read bedtime stories to.
