Two of my favorite things are covered in this book: changing the world by effectively supporting women and girls through innovative and creative organizations,
and creating equal partnership in healthy marriages where you both achieve and grow

This amazing little book of nonfiction is a clarion call of what can happen if we all work together to address the challenges facing our communities today. Melinda French Gates talks about her work at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through storytelling. The individual lives and collective voices that are raised up through addressing inequality, lack of resources, respect, and representation. There are some tough chapters here. More than once I had to put the book down and work on something else for a while. But the truth hurts and it is necessary— especially in today’s US political climate— to hear what must happen to overcome the idiocy running rampant at the moment. Take a deep breath, dive in, and feel like there is still hope in the world.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. When I checked it out, I actually had no idea it was by Melinda Gates! Once I realized that, I was a bit skeptical about what a hugely successful, ultra-wealthy woman would be able to tell me about lifting ALL women up. I’m amazed by how grounded and self-aware she is, and her empathy for others and passion for philanthropy really shows. She used just the right amount of statistics, so that they stuck with you instead of bombarding with by studies and numbers, which I feel like a lot of authors struggle with. It was the perfect balance of stories from her professional and philanthropic life, with straight up facts. If freaking Melinda Gates can write an entire book about how empowerment is about lifting EVERYONE, and not about stepping on others to advance yourself, then I think we all should probably listen.

More a strong 3 star and a weak 4. But for its central message that the true concept of feminism is not lifting women at the expense of men, but lifting women for the benefit of all society, I give it the benefit of 4 stars.

Lots of truths. No real epiphanies. Glad someone with the resources of the Gates family and foundation is discovering the struggles of humans and trying to help. With the amount of wealth in the foundation, I expect a lot of groundbreaking headlines from their work...because other than eradicating polio, which is great, what else is happening with those billions? Perhaps I am wrong, but it *seems* slow. Correct me if I am wrong.

Learned more about Ms Gates. I think her observations are insightful and motivating.
