3.5/4? i like a lot of the ideas, but the way some of them are illustrated isn’t particularly effective for me as someone who hasn’t seen a lot of childrens animation. the little references to zines and BLaB were fun for me

Very entertaining for a queer theory book! I loved the queer readings of pixar movies and the thoughts about how queerness is essentially a failure to conform to societal norms. At times however, I felt like the thread of the argument got lost in descriptions of fine art and the ties between the art and the theme of queer failure seemed a little forced. A theory book has never made me laugh out loud before and this book reconfigured my thoughts about what failure means as a queer person in a cis-het society just as I hoped it would. However, I felt like the focus on gays and lesbians only and their gnc-ness and the lack of discussion of trans people aside from a few throw away lines here and there was a disservice to the topic and to trans readers. Trans people are failures too!!

I really enjoyed it, but at some point it just got too dense and the red thread too difficult to follow amidst all the citations and name-dropping. I was really hoping for a more accessible philosophy book, and at least in part it lives up to that promise. Maybe I'll come back to it some time.

excellent! an interesting exploration of failure. i am inspired by halberstam's use of 'low theory' and pop culture. i often use pop culture as a lens into my own understanding of the world and my values. this is especially obvious in my drag performance. i highly recommend this book, especially to queer artists/makers.
