First, the voice acting in the audio book is top tier. The book is one long suspense novel, narrated by a silly little guy (Gideon), with much SAD but also much funny. Idk if the second book will be able to match up in humor (cause ya know), but I will be listening to it.
The world building is so, so good. And I’m always a sucker for necromancers. There was so much mystery, and still so many questions left to be answered.
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars SPOILER is cause I like a happy ending 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

The author’s mastery over different voices in her dialogue is something I appreciated so fiercely. The ambience is fucking scary and the dark a pervasive creature of its own throughout the novel. I was hooked on page one, the writing is just so robust and the world building and history of necromancy that they’re building is so intricate and powerful. The intriguing plot, the opaque character motivations, the screaming violence, the pathetic heart to it all– I was completely pulled into every single sentence. It was hilarious, horrifying, heartbreaking, and a truly remarkably told story. Gideon is an instantly unique and likable person to the reader and everyone she encounters in the book no matter how different the circumstances. Her wit and honesty paired with a sense of deep feeling really throws us about as she goes on this emotional journey of discovery and forgiveness. How am I gonna read the next book? I’m so scared, this one was just so freaking perfect.

A book so stupid good (stupid and also good) that it gave me brain worms so profound that, years after I last read it, I now have a tattoo of the main character as a goose.
Graphic: Murder
Audiobook was great, writing style flavourful, interesting world and main characters. I struggled quite a bit with the names and who is who, which probably wouldve been easier if Id read the physical book.

The book is extremely slow paced and it could totally be the reason why I did not like any of the characters. Events seem to happen without reason or consequence, there really are no characters you feel worth rooting for. Maybe that’s the entire point, either way I did not really like it.
