I thought the idea was very cool, and I read this book in one day because it was interesting. However, I just couldn't like the tense it was written in (first person present) and it kind of ruined the book for me. I think it would have worked better in past tense. Also, some parts were too vague or rushed. I would have liked to see it 100 pages longer with more details. The ending left a lot to be desired. Recommended if you like YA fantasy and want a quick read with an action-packed plot that's quite different than anything else, but don't expect it to be spectacular.

This book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Kallima (Kali) has lived her whole life on the floating island of Ashra, always creeping close to the edge, but knowing how traumatic a fall would be. Kali is the heir to the kingdom in the sky; she will one day rule the people. This also means that her life is not her own. This is most obvious through her betrothal.

As a lover of knowledge, Kali find solace in the library and annals of her kingdom. One day though, after overhearing about unrest in the kingdom, Kali confides in her best friend as well as her betrothed as they go for a walk near the edge of Ashra. Kali soon finds herself falling from the sky to the uncertainty below. Believed to be only inhabited by monsters, Kali quickly finds that there is more down on Earth than she thought, and her life will never be the same.

I really enjoyed this book. I am actually kind of sad to see that it has such a low review score on GoodReads right now. I found the plot to be interesting, and engaging. I loved the adventure that Kali was on as she learned about herself and what she really wants. As a stand-alone, the novel does end a little quickly after such a huge buildup. Overall though, I found this to be a solid read for fantasy and adventure fans. This novel will be suitable for all library collections.

Well, most of the characters were clueless and Kali passed out three times, but other than that it was pretty good. I say go for it.

This book was a blatant rip off of Skyward Sword, but a really stupid, less believable version of it. The "romance" was nonexistent and the "plot twists" we're so obvious I knew what was going to happen by the first two chapters. I actually laughed out loud at one "reveal" because it was so ludicrous.

Made it about 40% of the way through for what it's worth but I've officially DNFed this book.

And the fact that I've enjoyed absolutely nothing about this book by this point is the reason I'm putting it down. All of the characters I've been introduced to by this point are flimsy and the world hasn't interested me enough to push past that flaw, despite the fact that you've given a lot of information on it right at the beginning.

I also wasn't a particularly big fan of the writing? Perhaps that's why I found myself uninterested in both the characters and the world. The dialogue and descriptions didn't pull me at all into the world, and left the beginning a rather slow read.

Of course I only made it about 120 pages in. For all I know it gets better at the halfway point but I have no interest in continuing on myself, and the reviews don't promise that good of an ending from what I've read. For that I'm glad that I picked this up from the library rather than going out and buying a copy for myself.

Mmmmm nope. While the premise sounded really cool, the execution was poor. This book managed to be both filled with info dumps but lack in world building at the same time. And everything was so bland, including the entire cast. I don't know. I'm glad it didn't take me long to read this because there was a chance I'd just DNF it if I hadn't. Really, I got nothing out of this book which is a drag.

I feel comfortable rating this book a solid 3 stars because that’s how I literally imagined it the whole time. And felt confident with giving it a three.

The Vibe
At the beginning it felt like the Croods, which I haven’t seen in ages. But they were so used to their little world/home and didn’t go beyond it when the main girl comes across this odd guy who teaches her all these new worldly things that seem so cool but are so normal. And they eventually discover a new land full of monsters and it’s magical and all that jazz. But half way through the book it really gave me Love and Monsters (Netflix) vibes. All these dangerous weird monsters roaming the earth and monster hunters teaming up with non-monster hunters. And having to journey through the monster filled land to get somewhere.

It gave me a mix of those two movies.

ALSO I will say Kali, our protagonist, acted maybe 12-13 though this book says Young Adult. I personally believe this could be a middle grade.

The only reason I gave it three stars was because this book was just average. It felt younger, the world wasn’t that unique, but it still was like a relief from all the intense YA fantasy’s. It was like rewatching a movie you loved as a child. But in all honestly, I loved Griffin with my heart and soul. (Don’t tell Thorne
