I will only be truly dead if nobody ever comes, if the centuries, then the millennia go by for so long that this planet,…, no longer exists.

I can see why this book is so divisive. But it was very much a me book. It ripped me open and I absolutely adored being reminded we don’t need to know everything. That life is painful and unfair - sometimes those cages are of our own making. But wow, it’s so beautifully written.

I was full of relief when I finally finished this. I thought the concept was so interesting but the execution wasn't there for me at all. I felt like there were missed chances throughout the entire book to make it more profound, or generally more interesting. There was ample room for discussion of gender power imbalance in particular that I felt would have elevated the subject matter. In truth, nothing really happens both externally and internally to the characters, at least not in any memorable way.

Ok see, I felt the same way reading this book that I feel whenever I play Minecraft and adventure from village to village and steal crap from villagers. If you’re really into speculative sci fi that is too vague for its own good (me) you’ll probably love this. Really interesting overarching messages too. This would be a good book club discussion.

Found this an incredibly existential and compelling story on what it means to be human. It reminded me a lot of poor things and a short stay In hell. It strips a person down to the bare minimum and asks ‘what is it to be human? A woman’… I especially enjoyed the questioning and discussion of time and language, two things some would say are essential to humanity. It was a really beautiful story and I was sad for it come to an end as the narrator felt like an old friend. Definitely recommend for anyone in the mood for a strange world and human like characters.
