💭 T H O U G H T S
After not absolutely adoring The Bodyguard and Hello Stranger over the past two summers, I was determined to give Katherine Center one more shot. I was hoping for a return to her earlier writing style, unfortunately that didn't happen.
There is no denying Katherine Center knows how to write banter. However, the banter overtakes the narrative entirely. Neither main character is overly likeable, in fact, Charlie is down right mean at times. I didn't feel any chemistry between them, hence wasn't rooting for them to end up together.
I would have preferred more of a focus on Emma with her family - the caretaking, the grief, their relationship dynamics, the history. It was the scenes that included her father that really hooked my attention. Otherwise, I was overly invested in the story.
My main issue is how the whole cancer aspect was handled. It definitely knocked it down another rung. The book would have been fine without this plotline and I am not even sure what compelled the author to include it here. This whole part left an ick feeling, and was just a solid no from me.
The audiobook narrated by Patti Murin was fine. Nothing really stood out and I would have expected a different tone for Charlie's voice, but it read mostly in the same voice. I didn't necessairly notice as I was also reading with my eyeballs, but I can see how it would be an issue for someone solely listening. The bonus content and the author's note are a nice addition at the end.
There is no doubt in my mind The Rom-Commers will be one of the most popular titles this summer. However, it will not be a favourite of mine. It's evident to me Center has taken a more comedic approach to her writing than focusing on depth and development, which is what originally drew me to her books. This is the third straight release that wasn't for me, and so it's officially time for me to break up Katherine Center as a favourite author. Maybe I will still read more in the future, but they won't be on my most anticipated lists nor will they be a priority.

All someone has to say is, “This is a book by Katherine Center,” and I want to read it. Every book she writes makes me so happy, and that is precisely what THE ROM-COMMERS did, too. I laughed. I cried. I laughed some more. And I fell head over heels for Emma Wheeler and Charlie Yates. What an exceptional love story with the bad, the ugly, and all the good!
I love the way Center writes because whoever she uses as the stories narrator grips your heart and doesn’t let go. You can love them. You can get annoyed with them. You can want to hit them upside the head. You can cry with them. But they have such a stronghold on you the entire book that by the end, it feels like you are leaving a friend behind when you close the book. But that’s all the more reason to reread it 😉
For anyone who loves the grumpy/sunshine and forced proximity tropes, Center absolutely nailed them. They are two of my favorites, and I loved seeing Emma and Charlie stuck together! Plus, their banter while being a grump and sunshine is so good!
We can’t forget the fabulous audiobook narration by Patti Murin—one of my all-time favorite narrators! After hearing her as Emma and Charlie, I cannot imagine anyone doing it better. Her voices, cadence, and emotions make THE ROM-COMMERS an exceptional listen!
I’m not sure if you can tell, but I really liked this book and audiobook. Katherine Center writes fantastic books, in my humble opinion. You cannot go wrong reading or listening to THE ROM-COMMERS!

I read The Bodyguard as my first Katherine Center book and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I saw the opportunity to request an ARC of The Rom-Commers I jumped at the opportunity... and I think I am on the minority side of not liking it.
The premise of the book was the perfect plot for the topic of the book: two screenwriters being paired together to write a rom-com. One of them was never successful in getting their career started and the other is a staple name in the film industry. Emma is the unsuccessful writer who is a teacher and does any writing job her manager sends her in order to stay afloat with her father (who was in a terrible access 10 years ago and has led her to become his caretaker). Charlie is the successful one who writes a script and it becomes gold. He's behind many successful films and doesn't believe in love due to his own failed marriage.
I really wanted to enjoy this but could not get over the main characters, primarily Charlie. Charlie was overly rude towards and behind Emma's back it was concerning. The amount of times that Emma overheard him say she was an unsuccessful screenwriter nobody to literally anyone that would listen was upsetting and yet she never stood up for herself. I get that she's a big fan of his and an admirer but I really wish she would've confronted him about the things he was saying. Also, the third-act breakup was done in such a way that could've been done with communication! These two are well into their late 20s and could've solved everything by simply talking.
With Emma, I felt for her due to the circumstances she was under and the disaster that happened 10 years ago that completely changed the trajectory of her family's lives, however, it was very hot and cold with her. I saw someone pointed out that she witnesses the accident of her parents and then later making a joke about dying on a cliff, and then again with her at the pool and injuring her organs. The incident with her at the pool in the slinky dress was very toxic and I felt like that could've been omitted from the book. The sweetest story - truly just the embodiment of a good rom-com. Katherine does a really good job to keep you hooked and maintain the storyline at a pace that doesn't feel dragged out but also was not missing any details. I loved the banter between our two main characters from the get go. My heart was swooning the whole time - I als0 loved the sweet bits of advice and inspiration from her father.
Pros: Loveable characters, witty banter, unique plot, and explores grief, growth and forgiveness in a non 'heavy' way.
Cons: I did not love the second person writing; some points it was cute, and others it felt distracting from the story line. I would have loved a bit more interactions between out two MCs - which is a weird considering they lived together for 6 weeks, but at times it felt like a recanting of moments from Emma's pov and not the real thing.
Overall - I adored this book so much!!

Omg I loved this book so much. I cried so many tears, both sad and happy, and can’t not rate it 5 stars.
I loved Emma’s energy and personality, and the way she behaved around the stars of LA resonated so much. Her family overcame so much and was so lovely. You could tell Charlie was in love with her from the first second, and the grumpy energy made for such a good build up.
Both characters have a lot of trauma that they work through, both together and apart, and they’re just such a power couple.
I also loved the nods to the tropes and writing style of a rom com throughout. Fantastic writing and story.

This is my sixth Katherine Center, and I just love having her books in my life. I love how she talks about the complexities of life through the world of romance, and she does it with such unique characters. For this round, it's the story of two writers. One is a famous screenwriter who's lost his words, and the other is a woman whose always dreamed of a career in writing, but life responsibilities have taken priority. They find themselves working on a project where her job is to teach him about what romance in writing (and maybe life? I mean, y'all, this is literally a ROMANCE) looks like. This was an emotional journey, even more than I was expecting, so know that going in. But I adored the layers of this one, and the way the plot had so many layers. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the look at this June 2024 release!
