Bookish Life of Nina Hill
While it is obvious from the title of this book that the protagonist is a booklover like you and I, there’s little more to it if seen by taking a dive into this 340 pages book.
Nina Hill lives a relatively normal, peaceful life. By day, she’s a bookseller in a cute independent bookstore. By night, she’s someone who enjoys trivia events and is a member of multiple book clubs, with a massive tbr pile and sprinkle her cat phil. Doesn't it sound like a perfect life you and I, readers, daydream of? Then again, even with this packed life of the introverted nina hill, she knows something is missing in her life. Whenever this thought crosses her mind she just shrugs it off by picking up a new book. Again, did it ring any “it's me!” bells?
Just like nothing goes as we like, the universe begs to differ in Nina Hill's life as well. When her biological father dies, she comes to know about her larger and dysfunctional family which obviously freaks her out.
Nina hill was by far so much relatable for me because, She’s a bit reserved but opens up around the right people. She has conversations with her cat and finds comfort in sticking to a routine and in planning. She wants to connect with other people but also very clearly knows the boundaries of her comfort zone and doesn’t travel too far outside of them. And she has a bookish job, which I also kind of do.
One of the joys of reading The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is watching Nina adapt to and grow because of all of the drastic changes that shake her world in such a small period of time. These changes force her to become more flexible and find ways to incorporate the new with the old without sacrificing the aspects of her life that she loves.
These changes only add to her life and fill the holes she never realized were there.
And she has a love interest, Tom, her trivia nemesis. Tom is incredibly patient with Nina as she figures out how to handle the growing pains in her life. He’s supportive and finds the majority of her quirks charming, but Tom is by no means perfect. The book’s depiction of living with mental health challenges, both inside and outside of Nina and Tom’s relationship, is incredibly nuanced and makes for a satisfying read.

A doubtful read- really witty writing.
This was a heartwarming story, and for that I have to give it at least 3 stars. But for a few reasons I really struggled to empathize with the main character. The one I'm still trying to wrap my head around is how she started dating a man without knowing what he does for an occupation. Is that a thing??? Do people do that???

After growing up with an unconventional childhood and mostly absent, flighty mother, introvert Nina Hill enjoys the comfort of well-organized life. A job surrounded by books, nights of quiet reading alongside her cat punctuated with predictable, regularly scheduled social breaks with the usual people. This works a dream until a family revelation upends her carefully curated life, and a potential love interest causes her to question if her love of rules and structure is working as well as she thinks it is.
Charming and often funny, it's also a great portrayal of introvert life (it's not that we're antisocial, we just want to be prepared and recharge afterwards). Also, neurodivergence--we know Nina has anxiety but a number of her behaviors also closely resemble an undiagnosed adult with ADHD or possibly Autism--it doesn't matter in a sense if this coding is actually intended, it just means there will be a number of people who will find a lot to relate to.
