Okay, we've all watched Disney's The Little Mermaid a hundred million times, right? So other than getting a nostalgic taste of a beloved story, why read the original? That's why I'm here, never fear.
(If you somehow managed to avoid seeing The Little Mermaid, it is about a mermaid who forsakes her family and people to become human because she has fallen in love with a human prince. But, as we all know, wishes certainly have their price.)
Overall, the Disney adaptation stayed fairly true to the original story. I do think that the original is worth the read, however. First of all, the reader gets a better introduction to the sisters. I think Anderson's portrayal of the family dynamic was drastically missing in the Disney movie, which really just showed a slightly overbearing father. The best part about the original, however, is in the mermaid's motivation to become human. There is a depth in Anderson's tale far greater than a crush. I won't tell you, you'll just have to find out for yourself. This fairytale was beautiful, vivid, and absolutely heart-wrenching. In less than 100 pages, why not read it?

Like most of Hans Christian Andersen's tales, The Little Mermaid is far more gruesome than we are always led to believe. But at the same time, it is also more enjoyable because it feels like a more adult story.
This isn't your mama's Little Mermaid, this is the real deal. And it shows that we don't always get the happily ever after that we want. While that can seem quite depressing, it helps to remember that as we move through life.
