I cannot believe how much I liked this.

This is my first “splatterpunk” or “extreme horror” book and I’m worried that I might have started with the best of the best.

I heard that this genre was full of the edgiest, lamest attempts at shock value for the sake of shock value. This was anything but.

Most of the horror her is purely psychological. It’s a family drama at heart. Very similar to Hereditary, in that we focus on a family crumbling through the vessel of a demonic tale. Don’t tell anyone I said this, but this book handles that concept WAY better.

This book is unrelenting. It will indeed go there, but it never feels undeserved. The reason this book works so well is because it earns its depravity. It’s not just a series of increasingly vile events, it very slowly builds to a revelation.

They pull the rug out from under you right when you start to sympathize with Lori. She is a bad person and the book slowly reveals that in some of the best usage of flashbacks Ive seen in writing.

The violence is definitely extreme, but it’s rare. A majority of this film’s horror comes from its analysis of what people are capable of. Lori is pure evil, but not in a villainous way. In a purely desperate and depressing way.

I think that’s the main reason this worked. It’s not two people being tortured in a forest. It’s two people uncovering their true selves. and that’s truly terrifying.

Really liked the cosmic horror and otherworldly vibe of this book. I think Lori is a pretty complex character and I feel that the slow reveal of her past and personality is very effective. Pretty horrifying stuff in this book. The River Man was especially a fascinating character and I think the novel ends on a high note.

starting 2023 off with a bang

Read this for SUMMERWEEN and I won’t read anything else like this ever again

This is my favourite book of the last 10 years. I'm not arguing with that.
Poetic dark and brilliant, felt all the emotions, felt for the characters, I had the ability of reAlly hating and loving them, made me feel the chills down my spine, the excitement about where Lori was going, the journey through the woods and on the river, the music the blues and the suffering. THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR, HANDS DOWN

When i finally started to read this book, i came to the conclusion why it was so popular. Gone to see the River Man is a horror book that is perfect for the ones that want more than a haunted house book but not want to go full out and read a splatterpunk. It’s an atmospheric type of book that really takes your hand along the wat untill the end. Where it starts of pretty tame and pretty forward, it ends up getting weirder, more taboo and more horror. Where it was pretty straightforward, i ended up reading some pages twice because i could keep up with the changes in the atmosphere.

Warning:
Body horror
Taboo, alot of it.

It’s an multiple pov written story about a woman, Lori, that is obsessed with serial killers. And not just the stories, but connecting with them. This story is about her and Edmund (a serial killer) who wants her to go on a journey to the River man. And because of her love for him, she will. She takes her disabled sister on the journey with her, and along the way you learn about her, Edmund and the family dynamic in my her sister is like that, why her brother is dead and how she ended up like this.

A heavy story, bur one that really takes you from the moment you open it!
