You know... there is an art to being profane/taboo/controversial and I think it has a lot to do with intent. If you intend to utilize shock or things not normally written about, I would hope the intent is deeper than "because I can and I want to be shocking. Unfortunately, this feels firmly like "because I can".

This surprised me. It was much weirder than I expected, really surreal. And I knew from reviews I've watched that it was dark and messed up...but I wasn't able to anticipate the ways the protagonist would be terrible.
The prose is strong. Descriptive without being overly purple. Creative, evocative gore that served the story, rather than pure gross out. And the pacing is spot on. A steady build and the perfect kind of sharp ending for a horro novella.

the writing falters at times for me, but overall it's such a gripping, disturbing read. obsession turned greed turned pure, putrid evil.
Let me just say, I HATED this book. Absolutely loathed it. Which is why I gave it such a high rating. While for me I didn’t find this book scary or horror inducing really at all like many others have. I think it was a beautifully written character examination of a sociopathic/psychopathic killer and it’s not who you think. The characters were written so well, believably, realistically - and that’s why I hated this book so much. It is just so rage inducing. I understand the ending tried to tie it up and in a way “get what they deserve” but honestly. Fuck them.
