Well-written, not as gory or scary as I expected based on others’ descriptions. I feel like I mainly kept reading because I felt like there would be more horror elements as it went on but that never came to fruition for me. Idk, I kind of expected a book that would give me nightmares based on some spoiler-free reviews I saw, but
supernatural/taboo elements don’t freak me out that way. Personally I would not categorize this as splatterpunk (and likely wouldn’t have read it if it was, so I think that’s an important distinction to make). Most of the book follows a quest format with intermittent flashbacks and letters, which I thought was an interesting structure for a horror book! Three stars because I feel like I won’t remember most of what happened in a few months - no big complaints but also nothing standout for me; just an average read. Don’t let my review dissuade you, though - horror is so subjective so I fully believe that others may find this scary.

Maybe I did myself a disservice by reading this at FTX surrounded by other people, but I thought this book was going to be a lot more horror and a lot less splatterpunk. It felt half like a trauma-dump from MC’s fucked up past, with a gore fetish for the other half. A lot of jumping around which made it seem like two separate stories. The MC was also so damn unenjoyable and just an awful person to care about. None of the characters were remotely cool which did not contribute to a good rating. What I did enjoy was the abruptness of some of the elements of the book. Those were timed nicely and made the book pack a strong punch at times. Overall, decent book, though there was too much focus on gross/gore/inhumane shit vs actual horror elements that add to the plot/eerie feeling.
hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I really enjoyed this book! The writing was really beautiful and descriptive, which i find to be quite rare for splatterpunk/extreme horror so it was a nice surprise to find!
I knew i was getting into a disturbing story before picking this up, so i wasn’t shocked to find this really goes deep into some of the worst acts humans can do. Murder, r*pe, inc*st, this book was filled with human depravity and some of the scenes really turned my stomach.
Please check trigger warnings if you want to read this book, but if you aren’t easily offended, i definitely recommend this! It’s one of the best splatterpunks i’ve ever read!

I couldn’t stop reading this, like watching a car crash as it happens.

Hard to talk about the book without avoiding but I didn't like it, not particularly because of the disturbing things but there were parts that felt too rushed for me and other parts that were probably too drawn out for me.
