I enjoyed that the characters were so flawed, and the emotional portrayal of self destructive characters who ultimately allow themselves to grow and find happiness.

I really, REALLY wanted to like this, but the characters just didn't do it for me, and I wasn't super pleased with the ending. In fact, one of the characters I absolutely despised and couldn't understand for the life of me why anyone would choose to hang around them or keep them in their lives for a substantial amount of time, especially someone recovering from a severe mental breakdown. Overall, I was disappointed, and it felt dragged on, and I didn't resonate with anyone. I'm hoping Conversations with Friends is better, so fingers crossed!

Really elevated themes (religion, motherhood, sexuality) that weren’t present in Normal People so it felt like a more mature novel! I also really liked how it brought up pandemic life at the end and grounded the book in reality! I rarely relate to characters in novels, but could really find myself attached to Simon - hopefully that’s a good thing??
Only wish that there were more peaks and valleys in the story as it wasn’t as enjoyable to pick up and read as I would have hoped. And PUT IN QUOTATION MARKS!!!

I really don't think this novel was for me. Whatever magic some people find in Sally Rooney novels, I did not find it.
I did expect a more plotless story that is more focused on emotions, atmosphere and characters, but I still ended up feeling like I wasted my time. The characters were quite unlikable, constantly whining about things that were mostly their own fault, with no sign of improvement until the last few pages. The emails between our two protagonists, Eileen and Alice, were insufferable and mostly reminded me of teenagers who had just read their first philosophy book and thought they had understood everything to know about this world. Humanity bad, capitalism even worse, a pat on the back for reaching this age-old conclusion by ourselves. The two stars are from the few moments of recognizability from Eileen and some bisexual representation, kudos to that.
However, I still don't recommend the novel unless you have a particular knack for depressed millennial ranting.

Right book at the right time. I see myself in the characters and their struggle to find the beauty in this world when we are also surrounded by so much tragedy. Their wrestle to care about global problems when their personal lives are crumbling. Their inability to communicate and understand each other and not bottle up/project their feelings.

So relevant in current times. 💖💖
