I went into this novel with trepidation because I know it is so well loved and that there would be some hard content warnings. However, this was such an amazing fantasy novel! Marillier took the fairytale of the Six Swans and really made it her own. It is vivid, and the writing was lovely. Sorcha is a compelling, strong protagonist, and her journey throughout the novel is beautiful, heartbreaking, and hopeful. The romance was absolutely charming. There is a very graphic scene that was hard to read, so please look up trigger warnings, but I thought it was handled well. I love that each brother has their own personality, and I loved following all the characters in their adventures. Daughter of the Forest is a wonderful tale of family, heartbreak, and endurance, and I cannot recommend it enough!

I’m speechless. Daughter of the Forest is a tragically beautiful retelling of The Six Swans fairytale. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with these characters and the journey they went on. This book requires patience, but Juliet Marillier will reward you tenfold with the ultimate slow burn romance.
Highly recommend this for fans of The Bear and the Nightingale, or anyone who loves folklore, fairies, or historical fantasy.
TW: rape, animal death

- Rape of a child, the fae know it’s going to happen and don’t do anything and think she needs to suffer in order to grow and break the curse, then she is GRATEFUL she gets pregnant from the rape. Our MC has no agency, she is a tool for breaking the curse and hasn’t been able to make her own decisions or choices almost the entire book. Only the first act of rebellion at the beginning. I was enjoying this and even after the rape happened but the more I think about it the more frustrated and angry I get. ALSO the dog dies. Wtf????

Wow, I love this so much! Complex, layered, steeped in myths and folklore, this book absolutely broke my heart and then gradually stitched it back together again.

The writing style of this book was very easy to get into. The chapters did feel quite long and daunting to get started in (45-107 pages on kobo) but once I started I would easily read them away. I like how the writer took the time to give all the brothers personality before taking them away with the curse. Both main and side characters felt very well written and it was easy to feel invested in their stories.
