I normally love Elizabeth Moon but this book read like a DMV manual. Extraordinarily boring.

While I love the Vatta’s War series and was happy to read yet more about some of my favourite characters I was a little disappointed in this one because:

- There was a looong wait to get to the action with Ky confined to the house. I get that it was meant to convey how frustrated Ky was that she couldn’t act but guess what – it was also frustrating (& boring) for us as readers to sit around like Ky waiting for things to happen so we could get to the action.
- There was no Toby.
- There was very little Rafe. He was basically a walk on part. I missed Rafe engaging in his undercover theatrics. Plus I would have liked some more Rafe & Ky having fun together with their missions.
- I am so over whiny poor me Stella. I thought she had dealt with her issues with Ky but apparently not. It is still all about her hurt feelings and ego and how she is so important as CEO blah blah blah but silly impulsive Ky never respects that. She has no respect for Ky and what she has a achieved or what she went thru.

Lots of Lawyer shenanigans, a bit of an op, and then the climactic battle in just a few pages wasn't quite the balance I was after, TBH.

I just LOVE the series continuation! To be fair I have never read the previous series books before it was re-booted/extended but I do enjoy the new story-line a lot! Excited to know what will happen next!

the latest in the Vatta series, such a capable group of characters, likeable, strong, their adventures are huge, their tasks seemingly enormous to overcome, but unlike other stories full of delay tactics, stupid baddies, and internal conflict, this series is really uplifting. facing adversity as best you can and hoping it will all turn out right. really want this series to continue a long time.

Wonderful military space opera

In my mind Moon writes some of the very best military space opera out there. Packed full of action, political intrege and amazing hyper competent characters.

I read through it quickly and enjoyed it, but the first half felt rougher than the second and the pacing was off overall. The action ramps up in the second half and is maybe a bit too compressed towards the end, but the first (where the sections with Ky are essentially confined to a family house) drags on. There were a few too many instances throughout the book of people having repeat conversations with others who weren't in the know about the specifics of various events. Finally, some characters--notably, but not limited to, Stella--had bouts of "I have my hands on a potentially important piece of information. Well, I have some other things to do, so I'll conveniently forget about it until it bites us in the butt." One character was almost fatally poisoned and had that as an excuse for missing obvious red flags, the others not so much.

There's not much theme here, but many character moments and a lot of realism as the characters deal with childhood rivalries, government bureaucracy, would-be evil geniuses, and other problems of future life. I really enjoy Moon's characters but I think this would be a tough introduction to her work.

I will never have anything but love for a series from Moon with the word "Vatta" in it.
