Though very outdated for this time and day, this was a great read to get a perspective on what happened that night!

Brilliantly written and laid out, this was so vivid and engaging I felt like I was on deck, complete with a horrible sense of dread throughout the whole book. It's an almost minute by minute account that never feels tedious or overexplained and the amount of research and detail in this short book is commendable.
Particularly the separating of couples was devastating to read about, and this book honors by name people who sacrificed themselves and performed heroic things in the face of such a tragedy. It's informative, interesting, and devastating, with interjections on the impact of the sinking on maritime practices, and hard-hitting statistics (e.g. that the loss rate for for third class children was higher than first class men). It also brings forward the often forgotten stories of the third-class passengers and the crew which I appreciate. The experience of those on the Carpathia as it picked up survivors really added to the already vivid picture, and the short follow-up with the survivors, and how they are still traumatized and haunted every time they heard music that was played on the Titanic, is pretty harrowing. Just an excellent piece of non-fiction.
PS. I cannot believe the people on the Californian, I hope the fact that they watched the Titanic sink like it was a soap opera and not once made an attempt to try and assist haunted those men forever.
