Mia complains about everything- her friends, school, being a princess. It was just annoying to have her narrating. I've been a big fan of the movie for years and honestly the movie is just better. In the movie the characters are more likable and the plot has a better flow. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Was mir gleich auf den ersten Seiten auffiel, war der Humor. Der lag absolut auf meiner Wellenlänge und das finde ich nicht allzu oft.
Inhaltlich ist das Buch meines Erachtens deutlich für die jüngere Leserschaft geeignet. So richtig viel passieren tut hier nichts und manche Reaktionen der weiblichen Protagonistin waren schon extrem kindisch. Trotzdem war es ganz nett und amüsant zu lesen.
Der Klappentext ist etwas irreführend, da man annehmen könnte, dass Mia New York in diesem Band verlassen und nach Genovia ziehen wird. Dies passiert nicht. Das Buch handelt im großen und ganze nur davon wie sie von ihrer wirklichen Herkunft erfährt und wie sie damit umgeht. Das zeichnet sich dann durch allerhand Teeny-Drama (was mir gut gefällt) und einiges an Familiendrama (was streckenweise doch etwas sehr unrealistisch war) aus. Die Charaktere waren angenehm - vor allem Lars, der Bodyguard, obwohl er kaum etwas sagt. Auch der neue Freund der Mutter war sehr sympathisch. Der absolute Hammer war aber Mias beste Freundin Lilly und das Wissen, das diese durch ihre Eltern (Psycoanalytiker) hat. Ich hätte mich bei ihren trockenen Kommentaren zum geistigen und emotionalen Zustand anderer Personen hinschmeißen können, weiß aber nicht ob das auch bei der angestrebten Zielgruppe so ankommt. Aber für die hat das Buch auch genug andere Sachen zu bieten. Mia schwärmt natürlich auch für einen Jungen, hat Probleme in der Schule und Probleme mit Freunden.
Der Schreibstil ist locker und sehr lustig. Mir hat es gut gefallen, aber teilweise zog es sich doch, da immer die gleichen Probleme wieder und wieder durchgekaut wurden.
Alles in allem war es eine nette Unterhaltung für zwischendurch.

This was such a delight and nostalgic dream and I’m starting the series, because I haven’t read the books before the movies. I love love love that Anne Hathaway is voicing Mia. That makes the audiobooks even better.
This is the beginning of a series that I do like a lot. This is the first book in which Mia Thermopolis finds out that she is actually a princess. I liked it because it has the viewpoint that I had when I was an adolescent and I actually grew up when these books came out. Mia has a lot of the same types of thoughts that I had at that age like having a crush on a boy that I had no hope of getting, although I did not have that really snarky best friend that would always tell me what to do. This book is a way to hearken back to a time when one really did not have any responsibility other then going to school, although Mia does get the "heir to the throne" responsibility thrown in there, by her father no less.
I read this book several years ago and I loved it. It is great for the pre-teens and early teens. It is such a sweet story about an ordinary girl with an incredible family story. She finds out that she is a princess and has to learn all the tricks of the trade before she can be presented to society as a royal. She has flaws and faults that are relate-able. She must change some aspects of herself through princess lessons, but so much of who she is continues into her role as a princess. It was a wonderful read!
My adult self loved this book but my teenage self would have been obsessed! How many of us haven't dreamed of waking up one morning to hind out that we were a Princess... I know I have. I think that part of this series popularity is because it lets us play that fantasy out through Mia's experience and see exactly what life would be like. Meg Cabot has really captured the essences of what it is like to be a teen and to be trying to figure out who you are as well as what it is like to be uncomfortable in your own skin. Since the book is written as Mia's Diary we get to know her and the way she thinks extremely well. Mia's voice comes across as unforced and 100% teen, it feels very authentic. The reader is privy to all of Mia's thoughts and feelings from what she has for homework to her secrets. By the end of the novel Mia feels like she could be one of your friends. All of the characters in the book feel like they could be real and are easy to relate with. After all, we all had a "Josh Richter" in our lives at one point or another, he was popular and so cute and you had a TOTAL crush on him. This is a quick read that is lighthearted and very entertaining.
