I read this one exclusively via Audio and would like to re-read it in tandem with the physical book so I can absorb it more fully. I will definitely be writing an updated review when I get my hands on a physical copy.

I really enjoyed hearing Eli reflect on these topics as things were in 1999. Seeing the parallels, the differences and on many occasions the heart-breaking lack of positive change truly added a level of discussion to these topics that I did not anticipate.

I have added content/trigger warnings to my review but I want to point out that Eli does mention CSA he experienced in childhood on multiple occasions, at times in moderate detail.

A powerful and insightful look at multiple social issues including disability, gender, sexuality, and environmentalism, Eli Clare’s Exile and Pride still feels relevant 25 years after publication. In the later editions, Clare reflects back on mistakes he made in the first edition and how his thinking has been challenged and changed by readers. Footnotes like this are rare, but so important. The book as a whole is a testament to moving beyond single issue movements.

descriptions in the first half of the book were so poetic and really spoke to me while being interspersed with really solid theory. second half of the book focuses more on an examination of historical forces impact modern experiences and the role of personal histories on impacting our identities

From the foreword I was hooked. An uncomfortable and necessary read. It made me interrogate my privileged class position in new ways. I loved the section comparing pride and witness. I also appreciated the authors footnotes from later revisions. Class, race, environment, queerness, the author tackled the complexity of so many topics. This is absolutely going on my list of books to buy.
