High suspense, plenty of decoys and red herrings among tuk-tuks, politicians and sex industry. Yet the plot focuses so much on intrigues, it's more than easy to get carried away and get lost among layers and underlayers of motifs, agendas and alibis. Interesting, lively characters, although they do not always get exploited to maximum capacity. The book written in those days when Nesbo had only begun setting Harry Hole clichés and competing with himself trying to outdo himself with crazy, gory, sadistic scenes, so it can even be stomached. Contrary to Nesbo's later parts of Harry's saga, the book pays more attention to the story than pissing contests (a major annoyance in more recent books on Harry Hole), so an extra star for that.

Overall, a fun evening read.

A well-written thriller with compelling characters and interrelationships. The plot is enjoyable and fast-moving, but at times lack finesse, and I felt the twists did not land. The ending was exciting but a little incoherent.
