I was really frustrated by this book.   I'm frustrated by the fact that I care what happens next even though I didn't think it was very well written.   There was a lot of telling rather than showing (several times a character would say something evasively instead of just having the character <i>be</i> evasive and trusting the reader to pick things up.  The characters were either flat or extremely irritating.  It was hard to tell if magic was something that was generally known about.  I think the answer is yes, but the "mortals" and medians act like they're in two completely separate worlds.  But something must have been done right if I care enough to read the next book, but maybe I'll get it from the library rather than purchasing it.

"Mortal" is a weird choice to describe those without magical ability since it suggests magic users are immortal, which I don't think they're supposed to be.

Nico and maybe Tristan are the only characters I cared about because they're the only characters who seem to actually care about someone else.

These characters are supposed to be from different countries and possibly different classes but they all read the same.

I. Loved. This. It was super addictive and had (for me) the right balance between relationships and everything else, which I think it manages primarily by being so about intergroup politics/backstabbing & personal drama.

- do you love pretentious intelligentsia & academicians with murderous bents? imo, if you liked the prose and the narration in the Red Rising series or in Micah Nemerever's These Violent Delights, specifically for the broad inclusion of the social sciences and philosophy, this might intrigue you
- the magic is wishy-washy, v. soft, but worked for me tonally
- everybody queer, yay!
- romantic relationships develop out of nowhere, i was most convinced by preexisting romances.
- most characters had shallow arcs, but i loved the characters as written, there wasn't a dull combination to read on-page
- highly recommend the audiobook! it's a full cast

This was a good book. The theme was dark academia. Wonderful read for the fall. <Spoiler> I would have like for their to have been more action. For instance, at the end I was like that’s it, but in almost a good way

. Overall, nice book and I recommend to those who like what is stated above.

I first encountered this book on a table at Barnes and Noble and was intrigued. Then after finally hunting down a copy and a few months off reading, I jumped into it.

The over all premise is six of the worlds most power medeians (magic users) have been offered a chance to join the premiere and secretive Alexandrian Society, however after a year of study together only five will be initiated into the society and one will be eliminated and it is up to the group to decide which member they will eliminate. 

My dark academia/Warehouse 13/The Librarians loving self was all over this concept.

Now I will say, this book is dense. The rules of magic are deeply rooted in the rules of physics and there were several times I was struggling to keep up. But I am not a science girl.

The only other reason I'm giving this book a 4.5 rather than a 5 is because the opening section was difficult to get through. Initially I found some of the characters more irritating than interesting but the further I got into the book the more my opinion changed. I thought this was going to be a plot driven book but it sort of bait and switches in the middle and becomes almost entirely about the characters. By the end I was deeply attached to all of them, even Callum, though he certainly scares me the most.

I am also very glad that this isn't a stand alone because final act left me very confused and wanting more.
