Pulled me in, I couldn't stop reading. Depressing, but addictive. Noa pissed me off, I wanted to punch him, but an amazing read besides that.

An emotional family saga set during and after Japan's colonisation of Korea and WWII up almost to the present. It deals with the difficulties experienced by Korean immigrants in Japan, the war, poverty, misogyny, classism and many more. Although fiction, it is still closely influenced by true events and provides an overview of the situation many Korean immigrants endured at that time. The amount of characters and the objective point of view sometimes made it a bit difficult to care deeply about them, but nonetheless I think it is a very important and insightful read.

"Living every day in the presence of those who refuse to acknowledge your humanity, takes great courage."

From the very first page, I was invested in this beautiful family. The story starts out with a young girl who fell in love with the wrong person-- but this one event... shaped the rest of her life. Across 4 generations, two nations at war and never ending obstacles, Sunja and her live family lived the best life they knew how, lost many things, learned valuable lessons about themselves and life, and loved fiercely. I loved reading about these characters, their culture, the hardships they had to endure and the strength they found within them to over come. This book was a true show of the love, strength, pain and undying loyalty this family (and many Korean families like them) had in a time and place they were not easily accepted. Although I do wish some the storylines had more details, or were more complete... this is a beautiful story of love, sacrifice, ambition and family.

"There was consolation: the people you loved, they were always with you... she had learned."
