Read this ages ago and only recently added. Interesting scenes and sci fi concept was signature Crichton.

Great read, but most of the Crichton's I've read were great. This one is almost at Jurassic Park leve, but nostalgia makes it impossible for any other book to beat Jurassic in my book :-). Jurassic is what gto me into reading his books and the ones I've read so far were good, though I found 'Prey' a little more broing, but probably because it was harder to see the scenario as actually happening. a cloud of manufactued bacteria or something of the kind just didn't do it for me. In this one there isn't much character development, we don't get close to the people in the story, but still it manages to enthrall the reader and seriously made me want to rewatch 'Gorillas in the Mist' and 'Project Nim'. Actually, I just might do that now...

The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

Congo
By: Michael Crichton
My Rating: Four out of Five Stars
Best for: 16 and up

Ya...no. I'll skip the African Jungle Tour. Thanks though.

Oh gosh. Please don't read Michael Crichton if you aren't interested in science info dumps. It's what he does. It's in every book, and if you're nerdy enough it's awesome. Don't read it if you can't handle it. Clearly your not as big of a nerd as me.

I've loved Michael Crichton since high school, science info dumps and all. Jurassic Park was my gateway, but since then I've read everything he's written expect Congo and Sphere. Well...now just Sphere, cuz I just finished Congo. It was excellent!

Congo was an adventure in true Crichton style, and it was PACKED full of cool stuff. Primate communication and biology, the indigenous people of the African equatorial regions, geology of diamonds, ancient civilizations, 18 century explorers, even a 1980's perspective of computer technology and satellite communication. The latter was particularly fascinating. Congo was originally published in 1980, and the way MC was able to incorporate such detailed tech with layman explanations in a day when home computers were only a dream--it's just absolutely brilliant.

The way he's able to incorporate all that science into an engaging adventure thriller is so satisfying! I felt the peril, the tension, the stress, the fear, the terror...it was real for me, and I loved it.

Thank you, Michael Crichton, for helping me know I will never, ever have any desire to explore the Rainforests of Central Africa.

You won't find any language concerns or sexual content. You will find some gruesome deaths, some pretty intense thrills, and lots of scientific details. Best for 16 and up.

Happy Reading!

Nothing really specific makes this book stand-out in a positive of negative way. It reads pretty fast. There is interesting use of technology. The ending is pretty weak and the characters are fairly one dimensional. It was still enjoyable and I'm glad I've read it.

This was the first Crichton I read and I was terribly disappointed. The book has a poor storyline and the characters are underdeveloped. Feels like reading a book by a secondary school student, not a renowned author. I think I won't be reading Crichton for a while at least.

Oh dear, Crichton's writing is like walking down the street with someone you can't take your eyes off of but whose every utterance makes you realize you're wasting your brain listening to them speak. Even so, you can't resist answering their calls....'cause they so exciting....
oh hell.
