In a day when paranormal investigators are a dime a dozen Robert Herold takes us back to the late 1800s and puts together a group of characters who are quite believable as pioneers in the field of paranormal investigation. The story is a mix of supernatural mystery and horror, and it is not without some gory details - some of which I could've done without. I appreciate the attention to detail, but there are some things that I would prefer to imagine rather than have it all laid out for me. Of course, that's just my own personal preference, and I'm sure that many will love those descriptions. While I felt like the setup took a little too long, the author does keep it interesting, and each character's backstory is relevant to the story. Once the investigation gets going, it seems to be one thing after another for these characters, and there are some great twists along the way. I will say that I figured out the big twist at the end, but it was none too early in the story. In fact, it was quite close to the big reveal, so the author does a solid job of maintaining the tension and mystery throughout the book. The Eidola Project is a good mix of paranormal, mystery, and horror. It's fast paced and full of quirky characters, some hair-raising moments, and rich atmosphere. All in all, I quite enjoyed this debut novel, and I look forward to whatever comes next from this author.

I was gifted an e-copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I’ll start off by saying horror/spooky books are not my usual genre so I was really excited to dive in to this one! This was the perfect book to read right around Halloween too! The Eidola Project, set in the 1800s, follows a group of paranormal investigators who find themselves investigating a haunted house.

I loved the historical setting of this book - I feel like you don’t see that too often in ghost stories where the actual haunting is taking place way back in time. I also loved the suspense that was created every time a ghost or supernatural being was in the scene and I think the writing really helped create that suspense and draw the reader in. I only wish we had spent more time learning about each of the characters to better connect to them. (This book is part of a series so maybe that will come in the next books!).

I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves horror!

This book was gifted to me by Mr. Herold himself and I did really enjoy it. Well built characters, historical facts laced throughout in an interesting way, and I really enjoyed getting to know this world. Originally I was going to go with 3 stars as some of the language throughout made me uncomfortable but it was used in a appropriate way to reflect not only which characters are racist but also the times that this book is set in. If you enjoy paranormal spooky novels I definitely say give this one a go. Slow pace but in a way that’s enjoyable and a cast of characters that are mostly loveable or I hope will find redemption in the rest of the series. I loved hearing about the spiritualist movement, it’s good and bad, and also about parapsychology in its infancy.

The setting in this felt very atmospheric, especially when following Sarah’s story in the beginning from her hometown to the carnival. The story flow felt a little disjointed as more characters were introduced but it was neat to see how the group came together! I particularly liked Annabelle and Sarah, both for their individual characteristics and the bond they shared. Nigel was a bit obnoxious and messy, although this was likely by design, while the other characters left a little to be desired. Once the group got to the haunted house and began investigating, I was fully hooked and genuinely spooked. I was overall very impressed by the horror and paranormal scenes, so much so that I had a hard time reading this at night

The Eidola Project is about a group of people coming together to study the supernatural. Most of the story consists of their backstories and how the group came to be a part of the team.

The investigation of the haunted house happens at the end but that allowed for readers to get to know the characters, so I didn't mind. We do see glimpses of the house and the characters in the town it's located in.

The book switches between multiple POVs, which keeps things interesting. I liked getting to know the characters in the group. Sarah's story was one of my favorites.

Overall, I'd say it was an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to seeing what other adventures the group goes on.

I'd recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction and paranormal stories.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy for review.

Great historical fiction read!

I love books that are based in a different era, this one takes you back to the 1800s! The author captured the era fantastically! It’s a book with a supernatural aspect. I will say the story changes perspectives a few times and that did confuse me at first but then once I figured out what was happening and why it was so important to read the different perspectives I was okay with it! You learnt eh characters backgrounds and what makes them “different” If you’re into supernatural you’ll enjoy this one! You have a group of parapsychologists at Harvard, that study individuals with these powers, they determine if it’s legit or not. The characters are quite different from each other, but the group makes sense and they work well together. Let’s just say it was a great read, I rate it 4.5 out of 5, rounding up to 5 on the star rating here, only because I did get confused with the character switches in the beginning but learned to get used to it! So go grab it today and enjoy!!! THIS BOOK IS PART OF A SERIES!

Rounded up from roughly 3.5 stars ⭐️ I was so excited to get stuck into this one, a historical horror novel sounded like just my cup of tea!

The Eidola Project follows a group of people in the 1900’s, whose sole purpose is to root out the paranormal. They may find many fraudsters along the way, but some cases are horrifyingly real.

Firstly, this book starts with a bang. The first chapter gave me goosebumps up and down my arms. It takes a lot for me to feel scared with horrors, but this chapter managed to do it. Although, I unfortunately didn’t find anything else in the book particularly scary but others might! I really liked the historical setting, I genuinely felt like I’d been thrown back in time. I had a particular fondness for the carnival setting which felt so vivid in my mind. I loved that the author included some real historical figures too. It added something a little something extra to the book for me.

My main complaint with this book is that I didn’t connect with any of the characters. There is some potential, I could see myself connecting to a couple of the characters eventually. This book is part of a series and I often find that characters can grow on me with time, so I have high hopes for the next book. There was one character I particularly disliked. Some of his opinions made me feel particularly uncomfortable, but I think that’s was the point. A lot happens in this book and at times it can be difficult to keep up, some of the chapters seem to be weirdly placed. But I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next.

I would recommend this to horror fans who prefer a focus on the paranormal. I want to thank Voracious Readers Only and Robert Herold for allowing me to read this book and give my personal thoughts.

'In ancient Greek literature, 'Eidola' is the meaning of ghost - a spirit-image of a living or dead person; a shade or phantom look-alike of the human form.'

Wow! What a book! Fast paced, and time was taken for character development for each character. It gave me 'ghostbusters' and 'the conjuring' vibes!! I absolutely loved it! The seances and all are *chefs kiss*. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Highly recommended!!!! 👻👻

The author was very kind enough to send me his book to review. Thank you so much Bob!
