This book was a combination of two of my favorite genres. Historical and supernatural fiction. It also had strong female characters, which is always a plus. There are twists and turns and an exciting finish. I would like to know more about Sarah as well as the other characters. I hope there will be a second adventure.
I received this book from the author through Voracious Readers Only. I reviewed it because I enjoyed it and hope others will pick it up and enjoy the adventure too!

I was a little nervous going into this because I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction...but I really enjoyed reading this! The pacing was really well done - it was a little difficult to get through the first chapter since it was so long, but once I was hooked, I finished this in a single day! The ensemble of characters Herold created as ghost hunting scientists was so fun and entertaining to read about. I loved the friendship between Sarah and Annabelle, and the comradery - and even tension at times - between the rest of the team. The mystery aspect when they were investigating the Hutchinson house was intriguing, because I found myself guessing along with the characters!
The background chapter on Nigel's time in the war was good insight to the character, but it did remove me from the rest of the story a bit. I also wish there would have been more focus on Sarah as she was connecting with the ghosts in the Hutchinson house. However, we were probably left in the dark with that aspect to help with the plot twist!
Overall, this story was honestly a lot more enjoyable than I expected (again, not a huge fan of historical fiction)! I'm excited to read the next two books in the series!

I have mixed opinions on this one. The plot started off fast paced and easy to fall into. I was apprehensive of the 19th century setting, in my books I usually prefer the mid 20th century and later but the carnival setting really reeled me in.
There were definitely point of views that were more interesting and enjoyable than others. The parts I seemed to like the most were more the characters backstories. I enjoyed reading about Sarah’s life before she joined the Eidola Project. I have also been really interested in US history recently so reading about Nigel and the Civil War was cool, even though I didn’t like Nigel. Nigel’s flashback also had some fun scenes with intestines falling out of people and heads splitting open.
Didn’t love the sex scenes, don’t think they were really needed, plus the use of the word member, I will always associate with shitty fanfics.
I also struggled with how to feel about Edgar. I would love to hear the thoughts of POC on how he was written about, especially those POC with history in the US as Edgar was born into slavery. There was quite a bit of racism, a lot of which will be chalked up to the time period. Nigel is a dick to Edgar because he ‘hates all darkies’ but predictably by the end has conceded that he MAY have been wrong. At one point the book describes Edgar’s hair as nappy, which I’ve only ever heard used by white people in an insulting manner.
So as I said, I have mixed feelings. I’m giving it a 3 stars for now.
I received a copy of The Eidola Project from the author for review purposes.

(I was gifted an ebook of The Eidola Project by the author in exchange for an honest review)
The Eidola Project follows a diverse team of supernatural investigators uncovering the truth of ghostly apparitions and alleged mediums during 19th century America. The book spends most of its story introducing the reader to each member of the team, giving the reader a thorough understanding of who the characters are and what relationship they have with each other. This also means that there isn’t an overarching story until the reader gets closer to the ending, where the whole team must help a woman rid her house of ghosts, that the story becomes more complete, and the pacing quickens as the truth of the haunted house is uncovered.
Robert Herold is an excellent writer who has a way with words, describing everything in vivid (and gory) detail, making it easy for a reader to imagine the environment the characters find themselves in. The characters are well-written, interesting, and so very flawed, making it fun to follow them in their journey through the supernatural.
I would highly recommend it to others who likes historical fiction with a ghostly twist.

With The Eidola Project, Robert Herold offers a genuine supernatural story led by intriguing characters and unexpected plots at every turn. The use of various stories focused on many different characters kept this book moving along with a good pace. It also kept you on edge at all points as you waited to discover the truth behind the words. The Eidola Project lacked predictability which made it a fun and unique read that I would highly recommend to fans of the supernatural!

I had a great time reading this book. It's slower paced with good character development. I did not expect the ending early at all either.
