3.09 AVERAGE

3 1/2 if I'm being fair. Solid A for most of the characters, chemistry, and banter between the romantic leads. Overall enjoyable but you have to make a lot of allowances for the plotting.

English professor Athena returns to her hometown to attempt to write a book and lick her wounds after a professional embarrassment. To her surprise she finds herself thrown directly in the orbit of an ex who broke her heart who is dealing with his own upheaval. In this romance you have a classic Forced Proximity, Opposites Attract, and Star Crossed Lovers all in play. The town has a very Stars Hollow feel with quirky closely-knit townspeople. It's fun with a side of literary references sure to please my fellow bookworms. However. Most of the things creating obstacles require a lot of work to be believable. Everything related to Athena's book concept (to uncover the identity of a writer known for an erotica series inspired by classic literature) and that fictional series itself is cheesy almost to the point of cringe and I don't want to even get into the doofy, uncomfortable caricaturesque portrayal of the Russian man who is vyung for Athena's attention.

It's easy to get on board with the romance but hard to swallow nearly everything else. It seems like it would have been better if it were a little more pared down and focused on the interesting characters rather than doing so much gymnastics to explain itself.

I love books about books and this one did not disappoint. The wit in Blame It on the Brontes was top notch also. I really enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed this book and this part in particular:
Because I cannot abide you both—
I'm sending my farewell—
The future holds but joy for me—
For you a taste of hell

This was a fun read with lots of witty references to some of my favorite books!
