While I did tear up at multiple points, reading
Vincent died in Theo’s arms. Theo died alone
had me crying in the living room surrounded by my family. I didn’t even realize how attached to Vincent and Theo I had gotten until right then.

Although Vincent’s life was overall very tragic, this book never reads as tragedy porn. Vincent’s (and Theo’s!) life is described as having moments of joy, being worth living even if it was hard. It was hopeful. His life was hopeful!! He pointed hundred of paintings about being happy!!

Finding out that Almond Blossoms was for Vincent’s godson also made me really emotional for some reasons.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I could not wait to be finished. The telling of the story felt like it took up twice as many words as it needed to. On the other hand, this book accomplished what nothing else had before--made me curious to learn more about the lives of famous artists. I've never had much interest in famous artwork, but it should have occured to me before now that learning the stories of the people behind the paintings might give me the context I need to take more interest in the art itself. I'll certainly look at Van Gogh's paintings differently now.

Tears, so many tears.
I loved Vincent's art so much already, but love him even more now.
An incredible, engaging, heartbreaking, informative and captivating biography of the Van Gogh brothers. I'm so glad this is the first in depth biography I've read of Van Gogh since it tells the story of Vincent and Theo as brothers and artists. Because without Theo and his wife Jo we wouldn't have the Vincent Van Gogh we know today. This is non fiction but I flew through it thanks to the readability and amazing storytelling of Deborah Heiligman.
I highly recommend the audiobook narrated by Phil Fox. He has the best voice for narrating books and as a native Dutch speaker I highly appreciate his efforts at pronouncing names and places "the right way" (not to sound purist).
I've loved this every bit as much as I love Vincent's work and I ask everyone who is even the slightest bit interested in his life, work, personality... to read (or listen to) this book.
