NY Public Library electrified and turned into an arena for an intergalactic gladiatorial battle that happens once every 1,000 years - sounds great doesn't it?

It's not.

I'm really good at suspending disbelief to enjoy fantasy and sci/fi but this book pushed the limits that I have in suspending disbelief. The amount of plot holes, unanswered questions, ridiculous decisions and paper thin characters had my wishing this was a shorter book so I could have been done with it sooner.

It had some interesting battles and ideas so it does get a 2 star review but this is one I'd pass on.

This book was recommended to me by my husband since he is a big fan of Matthew Reilly. Just as he described his books as being like a movie I couldn't put the book down. I finished it in 4 sittings (usually a book this big takes me weeks)

It was like reading a movie. That's right! I said reading a  movie. The writing style is meticulous details of everything happening in one frame, and cliffhangers and climax and anticlimax parts at the end of chapters: exactly how it would in a sci-fi techno-thriller. All action parts are amazing and will put you on edge. In some parts you will put the book down in disbelief at what just happened. I do not think I have ever been this loud reading a book. Loved it.

Big & dumb and it really dragged on despite being pretty short.

I picked this book up years ago, on clearance, simply because it was set in the New York City library and I thought that sounded fun. Of course, the plot also involved aliens so I was expecting a pretty cheesy book. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Enough to read pretty much everything else he has written. One of my favorite current authors! I would actually recommend [b:Seven Deadly Wonders|144791|Seven Deadly Wonders (Jack West Jr, #1)|Matthew Reilly|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348291032s/144791.jpg|1271370] if you are looking to read one of his books.

His books are pretty much the literary equivilant of action movies. He tries to keep the suspense non-stop. Not the most emotionally evolved reading, but I find most of his books addictively entertaining.

Was excited to read based on blurb but then it's aliens, not saw-like or hunger games-like as I expected. Well written tho.
