This was a fun book, and it has all sorts of nice little details and interesting bits of information for animal and nature lovers. However, it's not a truly scientific book, since most of its content comes from the author's own observations in his farm, which makes a lot of the things he affirms simply impossible to confirm. Do I think animals can experience grief? I most certainly do. I can't prove it though, and I'm certainly not a scientist or an expert, so why would I write a book trying to prove something I can't? Well I wouldn't, but others seem to have done exactly that. I felt this was a bit too watered down to make it attractive for people who don't like reading books that much, or at least books about science. But it's fun and quick, just don't expect to have your whole universe shaken by it.

Although not as good as The Hidden Life of Trees, it's still a fun read. I have to admit both the beginning and the end were much better than the middle portion of the book. That part consist mostly about small observations of his own animals.
Which doesn't have to be a bad thing. But it's just that. Some observations. He could have easily just science to back up is observations. Or maybe get a bit more philosophical like in his other books. This part is a bit too shallow for my liking.
But overall I liked it very much.
