At the time of my writing this review, the novella has an average rating of 2.65 on Goodreads. That's about the rating I want to give this. It was a book, congrats for writing it (that's 2 stars). And then like it aaaaaaaalmost makes it to the "I enjoyed it but would have a hard time recommending it to anyone else" 3-star rating. It was fine. I enjoyed the horror elements, the setting, the gore. But the purple prose was just way too much. And I honestly think it would have been better with another 100 pages of fleshing the characters out and giving more to the story. It was too much, too quick and not enough time to get used to the writing style or figure out who everyone was. At the point someone dies I was like, "oh, okay". Didn't care at all because I hadn't been given any reason to. Idk. But the atmosphere was great!
Things I liked:
1. The cover scares the shit out of me EVERY time I see it.
2. The audiobook would randomly have a ghost bride whispering Japanese in my ear and the hair on the back of my neck would stand up. I also almost wrecked my car in one of those moments.
3. The self awareness of the characters about horror book/movie tropes added an unexpected source of humor.
4. The depth of house haunting was pretty intense and begged to be expanded.
What I didn't like:
It is a short book so it had to pack a lot in a tiny bit and after the above things happened it just stopped building the suspense and I wasn't scared anymore. Coming from someone that is permanently scarred from a childhood viewing of Poltergeist and will only listen to haunted house books on the way IN to work, this might be significant.
