sad medium-paced

4.5 stars, I didn't know anything about this book before reading it, and the introduction gave away most of the plot so...I know it's a classic but come on, we all have to read them for the first time at some point!
I love Hardy's writing, and his portrayal of a woman in unfavorable circumstances is impressive for the time (as far as I know, I was impressed anyway). It really is tragic, but can a girl find one decent man on the planet?

I finished Tess of the D'urbervilles tonight. What a brilliant, emotional, tragic novel. It hit really close to home throughout most of the story for me, and I absolutely loved the ending. The writing style was creative enough and the story maintained my interest. It came close to Anna Karenina/Levin territory but Hardy did it way better than Tolstoy by giving purpose and allowing the monotonous farming to be crucial to the plot and actually develop it rather than take away from it. Looking forward to watching the mini series now.

I think both men are asshole, deuce bag, whatever unlikeable guy is called. And Tess, perhaps because of the time setting of the book is written, is desperately wanted to have a guy to spend the rest of her life with. To be honest, I have more sympathy on Alec D’Uberville than Angel Clare. I mean, your wife was trying to be honest, and you just left. That’s suck!

I also feel a sense of paganism in the book, perhaps it’s an ealry rise of atheism in the english literature.

Overall, I skimmed quite numbered of pages since too much unnecessary details.

Can't blame me for liking sad prose. This is so good that it hurts *sigh*.
