This was entertaining but I mean, basically every trope in one? Like I’m not saying it wasn’t a fun read, but it wasn’t anything new. Also I thought the characters and the magic were a little bit too silly, which I know should maybe be expected in a children’s book, but hey. Harry Potter is a children’s book and it was not this silly. The elf world just seemed to be a giant collection of oddities to surprise the main character. There was no history, no real world building, no nothing. Additionally, I truly couldn’t distinguish which character said what because they were all the same. They all acted like children, and I’m talking about the grown ups here. And the petty fights and love drama was also very annoying and unnecessary. I find it hard to believe that this 12 year old girl somehow has so many guys interested in her. Also I don’t like the racial segregation vibes I get with the way the elves, goblins etc are separated and that the goblins and dwarves or whatever only do physical work like tending to the elves’ gardens? Why can’t a goblin do something other than a bodyguard position when an elf can do basically anything? It’s just strange. So yeah, even though I did enjoy reading this, there were definitely a lot of flaws.

I can honestly say that once I picked up this book I was unable to put it down. In fact, I ended up staying up until about 3:30am to finish this book because it was such an engaging read. “Just one more chapter” turned into reading the whole book in one night.
While the size of this book might seem daunting, it’s a quick read full of action and adventure. The characters are engaging and feel real, almost as if they could jump off the page and hold a conversation with you. The plot was interesting and left me wanting more – which makes me happy it’s a decently sized series. There are so many twists and turns in this series that it got to the point where I had to keep reminding myself who was on what side and how they’d proved that. I loved every second of it.
Messenger did an amazing job at keeping her characters true to their ages, and although Sophie may seem very mature for her age at times, at other times she’s your average twelve/thirteen year old who has fears and insecurities that anyone that age would have. Sure she’s got a lot of responsibility, but Sophie still finds time to play games with her friends and just run around goofing off like any kid. She has a crush just like your average twelve/thirteen year old might have, though she doesn’t realize it. In fact, true to the age she’s supposed to be, Sophie goes out of her way to deny it to her friends. She doesn’t think she does, so she couldn’t possibly… right?

This was so fun! I thoroughly enjoyed Sophie's adventures. I have so many questions still though. I can't wait to read book 2.

I am hooked on this fun fantasy series. I cannot wait to read the next one. The magic system is neat. The characters are great. My heart just hurts for Sophie. She has a rough time of it.
