This book says alot but the plot does little and then the end just rushes at you.

I will definitely read more from this author though, her writing is magnetic.

Not what I expected it to be from all the talk I heard. Calmer, more subtle, and more heartfelt.

Really loved this book. Only gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I also just read Cain's latest book "A Horse at Night" which I adored and gave 5 stars and if I'm being honest liked just a bit more for no particular reason but it just captured me more. That said, this is a terrific book that takes place in a different time but plumbs the protagonist's inner life so deeply you often forget where you are - in a good way. She is a woman who wants only to write except when she doesn't, goes from poor to rich to somewhere in between and ends up where she wants to be. She doesn't think she has a great talent and she probably doesn't but she loves writing for its own sake and for how it fills her life and I just loved that. Well worth reading.

A soothing, at times overly simple book about artistic vocation and the traps of patriarchy. Cain creates a dreamy, small, old-fashioned world of rich husbands and maids to play out a classic struggle between expected behavior and the pursuit of art. Perhaps its reductive nature, alongside the moments of beauty in the text, made it such a calming read.
