This is an incredible book if you're looking to get a taste of what Victorian ghost stories are like! This is a collection I am using in my phd, so I may be a tad bit biased, but I think it is some brilliant writing. There are very few ghost stories from this era told from the female perspective, and Broughton has quite a few in here! Broughton was well known for her more scandalous novels, and this can be seen easily in some of these stories, particularly "The Man with the Nose." Big fan all around!

Five short stories put together into one book by Victoria Secrets. Of the five stories, the only two that I thought were slightly better than average were The Man with the Noose, and Poor Pretty Bobby, the first being only moderately eerie, while the latter more sad than anything else.
I have a problem with Rhoda Broughton's writing style, in that she places her pronouns at the end of sentences, which seems unnatural, and distracted me.
These stories certainly weren't bad, but there are definitely more interesting authors out there to read instead.

This is a short collection of stories about 90 pages in length.
I enjoyed the mixture of stories and genres. There was a bit of the supernatural, a bit of crime but all were told really well. There are some wonderful descriptions of the everyday life and I enjoyed those insights the best.
It is an enjoyable read and it will not take long to read.
